be honest; does a short, nerdy, nonathletic guy have a chance at passing US Army Basic Training?

If you can run 2 miles in about 15 minutes and do 50 pushups in under 2 minutes you will be fine. But it is about will power.

Why do people think like this? This is an extremely skewed & ignorant view to hold.

It's either a troll or someone showing their ass politically. Never underestimate what drinking the kool aid can do to someone's perception.

Going to speak with a recruiter next month. Still worried that my vision may disqualify me from service

how bad is it?

-7.50 & -7.00. Sucks because I've never had a problem wearing glasses or contacts. No criminal bg, & fit

What’s the whitest branch?

Any tips on willpower /meg/? I’ve been training for a few months now but I’ve never felt the pressure of selection. How do you guys keep your mind on straight during rucks? Do you train until it’s just physically not that demanding? Or is grit just a you-got-it-or-you-don’t situation

>Not signing up to go on wacky adventures
jk I know I'm going to be stuck behind a desk somewhere

>implying
It only matters if they can find it and if it will affect your service.
>adhd and depression
Diagnoses are a dime a dozen. There's no national medical record system. If you never mention it they will never find it.
>security clearances
The SF86 doesn't ask about that time in 8th grade when you were really sad, as of the 2016 revision.
>that time you broke your leg
No issues with it? Don't mention it.
>what about Tricare
If you've ever been on Tricare the government has your records already and none of this advice applies.

>Any tips on willpower /meg/?
impossible, anyone who says different is blowing smoke up your ass. You either have it or you dont.
Now with that being said, you wont know if you got it until then. Some people youd think would never buckle but do, and some quiet guys you think will quit wont.
Its a combination of youe entire life experiences making you who you are.

Ah, interesting. I’m assuming you speak from experience. Got any stories of tough guys cracking?

Not that guy but dope. I'm filling my SF86 at the moment and I wasn't sure whether to include my hypothetical experience being depressed for a couple months senior year of high school. If potentially smoked weed a couple times, should I list that? (if it's been more than a year and a half)

Lie about both of those things you dummy.
What clearance?
Were you ever on tricare? Parents in the military?

DoE's equivalent of a TS with SCI. No tricare, no military parents.

what do those numbers mean, are you both near and far sighted?

>Got any stories of tough guys cracking?
I was never SOF, i was navy and if you know anything about the navy all the guys who fail buds get sent to the fleet and hate their lives. So they share loads of stories and what not. And im telling you we had like 4-5 guys on my ship who seriously looked liked jj wat. Absolutely shredded with muscle, fast as fuck and all were like 6'2. I got injured twice and got dropped, 2 others i remember quit cause they were mentally weak and another guy had an attitude problem and the instructors shit on him and kicked him out. The point im trying to make is you cant judge a book by its cover. I have no clue what the "secret formula" is for someone to make it but being in fantastic shape isnt enough. You gotta have the right attitude and honestly just be lucky. Random people who should make it get randomly hurt out of the blue and their dreams end. I dont know how you can make yourself lucky but just hope you arent the guy whose doing a night run and steps in a hole and snaps his ankle.

Will I have my life as a CTI?

I'm afraid I'll spend all day being the virgin who just translates shit while the chad CTRs actually go out and collect the intelligence.

Alright. Tell any references who know about your degenerate pot smoking ways to shut up if asked. Same for your edgelord depressed phase.
Did you ever attend therapy or take medication?

>chad CTRs actually go out and collect the intelligence.
that isnt what a ctr does at all

Truth, my recruiter told me about 3 guys who shipped 18x, two 6'2" amateur bodybuilders who went together and one nerdy 5'7" dude. The gym bros dropped out of selection on day 4, the nerdy guy now uses a SOCOM email address. Go figure.

Ya theres definitely something to be said about a scrappy underdog. Someone whose had to struggle his whole life as opposed to someone whose lived on easy street forever.
You got an 18x contract friend?

Nah, 11x option 40. I like the idea of not going needs of the army if I wash out.

>mfw 6’4”
Doomed to fail i suppose

Cheer up friendo, it all depends on how hard you work. Bodyweight exercises will suck for you but on the flip side you'll kill people on rucks.

Nothing that would ever come up on record. References are aware of the fact I'm starting to do spooky stuff even though I'm super vague about it. They're good.
Not that guy but that's good to hear. I've never been a bulky guy and honestly I'm kind of a nerd in some ways but I can hike for miles upon miles so that gives me some encouragement for passing SFAS in a couple years.

Thanks man. I just have trouble with pull ups, but I’ll be targeting my back extra hard to get my lats to catch up. I’ll make it eventually

I've never actually seen that. If you fail they'll give you a list of jobs to pick or give you the option to get out.

Hey if you're interested in maxing the pushups part of the APFT there is a great program Stew Smith has. If you're more interested in actually getting the movement down and using your body better there are some good pushup variations that aren't too difficult as well as some other exercises I can list out.

By "go out and collect" I mean get deployed to ships/aircraft to intercept signals while CTIs stay in the US and receive the intercepted communications to translate.

that also is not how it works friend.
CTRs get stationed on ships, they dont randomly get attached to ships. Theyre normal ship riders like everyone else. And all this "collecting" youre thinking is high speed is really sitting in a dark room starring at a screen. Nowhere near as exciting as youre thinking. CTIs are the ones who actually deploy and attach to SOF sometimes.

>option to get out
This is not a thing. By the time you get through 11x osut and get to selections, youll already be in long enough that theyve spent a good amount of money on you.

FYI to those who fail 18x selections, remember to go to S1 after you get reclassed to a new MOS, to get 11B as your secondary MOS qualifier. You passed through 11x osut, so your qualified as an 11b/c. The reason they send you to needs of army is because, 11b is overmanned by so much, they are glad they can send you to undermanned shit like 94 series or 19d.

I don't mean to sound like a dick but it sounds anyone going in as an 18x should make fucking sure they pass or at least statistically give themselves the best chance possible.

dont larp as me
youre correct
thats easy to say but good luck convincing all the cod kids not to do it

Joined a week ago now on a 4 day easter break back home. Seems pretty softcore so far. Only thing Im worried about is a 8k march in a month or so. Im not that fit, any tips to prepare, like exercises that I can do im the barracks?

I wanna join the Army and go infantry for fun and the experience. But at the same time I wanna join the Air Force for the job prospects. What do?

Become the explosion.

Attached: cct.jpg (3000x1993, 660K)

Yes they should, but most people dont.

I always recommend people wanting to go 18x, to take at least 6 months to prepare. Im talking, PT scores above 85 in each event before you even walk into the recruiter office. Taking land nav courses with local search and rescue. Doing a goruck challenge or two, to test your endurance. Maybe even take a couple of project appleseed courses to make sure youre marksmanship wont be an issue. Also research as much as you can into what special forces actually does, and read up on some good leadership books like once an eagle, before you get in.

Its a tough ass career to get into, and it doesnt hurt to prepare and give yourself a better chance to succeed.

Im not gonna lie, its hard as shit to prepare for selections while in. I am in intel, and i personally was working mon-fri 0700-1800. At least one weekend a month I was either out on an FTX as my battalions RTO, or working a staff duty shift. There was hardly ever any extra time for me to focus on getting a degree, or taking extra prep classes for shit like selections or rasp. Im in reserves now, but my body is too stiff, and im trying to raise a family now, so cant go for selections or rasp anymore. I wish I had a resource like meg to ask questions back then, cause I thought i knew what i was doing when i enlisted, but when i got in, everything went to shit. Bad luck after bad luck.

Dont join mil for job prospects unless you have a specific job in mind. The gi bill will cover anything you want to do.

>Depression

Don't join, once you are in you will be more depressed by how shitty everything is.

lol

you recruiters scared you won't meet this months quota?

haha ya totally xDDD

This isn't always true, the suck puts alot of life into perspective. It isn't for most people but for some it's what they've been missing their whole lives.

You're either a Marine or larping as one.

if i can make it into the marines, how many crayons do i get to eat?

You graduate boot with a 7 pack, then after soi you get the 32 pack.

Yeah that does seem to be the one strength of going 18x vs putting in a packet for selection while already in. I mean if I really wanted to spend cash, I could even go to a personal trainer and say: "These are the exercises and events I need to do. Help me get my body to do them well."

What can I do to prepare for EOD school?
What does it take to succeed?

Do TACPs specializing in controlling different types of aircraft

Plan on maxing the PFT before you go in just to make your life easier.
EOD school is stupidly academically rigorous. Study like a madman because failing two tests means you just lost your MOS.

Exactly, invest inyourself to succeed.

I mean shit, if u just did gorucks until you can do their version of selections and pass that, pretty sure youll be at like a 80% youll pass special forces selections. Plus half the cadre are ex sf anyways, they can give tips.

Learn how to study efficiently, brush up on your chem and physics, max out PT.

Can anyone succeed if they study properly? Or can only certain people succeed at it

How much free time does an army guy get? I take it that it depends on your mos and if you're deployed or not. Will I be able to take some online classes on the side when not on deployment, no more than 2 a semester? I have an associates and can complete the rest of my degree at a state school online.

U just gotta be good at learning shit and have good study habits. Because phase 1 where most wash out is all math and science questions.the second part where most fail is toward the end when u gotta cram a shit ton of info in your head. My buddy went through eod course for army and he almost washed out at the end.

It depends on your job and your unit. In my case, i had zero free time to do college. Whats even more shitty was i had peers who were never assigned critical tasks and got to physically attend college on their off time. Some units even say fuck you to using TA and going to college on off time period. Its at discretion of commander. I would say 80% chance you get to do college on offtime. To get that extra 20% on your side, just dont be too good at your job and stay under the radar.

youtube.com/watch?v=DlUpj0Po97A&t=7s

Cont

Everytime i hear someone go lol i got my degree during off time online it was so easy, im just like, guess you didnt have a real job, or got lucky and had a relaxed unit that didnt do shit. I was intel btw, and for 5 years it was just work work work, 0700-1800 weekdays until i hit e6, then i was working at DIA and even then i had zero time. When i got to a normal line unit, i had 2 years left and said fuck all this and focused on getting my warrant packet complete before my ets. Studying for alc and other ssd shit and kissing ass for letters of recommendation took all my time and effort, in addition to having to go tdy all over for further training.

>Not including the almighty Coast Guard

Leave

Yeah my boss is actually a former 18 series so I've been able to get some guidance beyond the "max the APFT and run a lot." In the end though, he basically just told me it's not impossible so therefor there's nothing I can't do in it.

What kinda math and science we talking?

Id really focus on landnav if ur a pt stud already. Youve never done landnav until youve done it night under a time limit. Ive proctored a night land nav course with NVGs, and i still was having a shit time.

Basic physics and chem. Im talking formulas for force, torque etc, and chem wise, just how chemicals react and how atoms and shit work. At least thats what some phase 1 failures told me when they arrived at my unit lol

Been hitting the gym 6 times a week with 40-80 minutes of biking cardio( only stopping for traffic) in order to get myself physical prepared for option 40

Should I do the ranger training program used on goarmy.com instead? Last time I lifted this hard I could 60-70 pushes straight burlt never did push ups. Also could do 22 pull ups because weighted pull ups.

Have you been running at all? I say this because I did a fuck ton of athletic activities besides running before starting and while it's probably easier for me than most people, it's still a ton of work.

legit most spec ops trainers dont reccomend lifting too hard. They say do enough weights to work your weak stabilizer muscles but the majority of your training must be cardio. Running in boots and pants. Running off road in the woods or on a beach will help tons.

No, ill incorporate that as well. I just really want to be a ranger, I dont want to fail.

We JTAC now!

When is your information coming from? I know things change pretty quickly but a couple years ago they were offering to ets people

>lying about medical history = good
Yeah, so just lie to my recruiter about going to a psychologist after I was about to kill myself. Right. He won't find out?

You're the ideal demographic, actually.

If you went voluntarily with no court order.
But as yourself, will the hardship of service bring back your desire to die?

My info is coming from interactions with special operations type people during daily job. I cant really give any more specific info because my name is on the office

Running on different surfaces will also give your feet a break as running six days on the sidewalk is not the best for them. Swimming is also great way to cross-train if you have access to a pool as well.

Forgot to say my info is up to date as of like a month ago, but then again i mostly talk to people whove been in for at least 3 years or more. So... take that as you will

>but as yourself, will the hardship of service bring back your desire to die

I don't know, probably not. I feel okay now. Keep in mind this was a few years ago.

Then yes lie, they'll never know if you day nothing and put down references that won't say anything.

completely wrong
Read the OP, theres a new section with all the prep programs in it

Attached: 1461466450769.jpg (670x446, 17K)

Alright anons, just finished asvab test with a 93, dlab with a 114, and medical. Also did a pt test with recruiter yesterday and got a 92/87/91. Im going for army, and want to go sniper or recon, whats the best route? I know about opt 40 and 4, and im confidant i can pass the physical portions, and marksmanship(ive competed in nra tournaments). Obviously i have no clue about the stress portion and the mental challenges. I would just like some input on the best way to go sniper or recon. From my research it seems getting a sniper school slot is hard as fuck in regiment compared to applying in a normal airborne unit. And recon selects mostly from regiment and requires airborne. Should i just go in on an opt 4 in order to have a better chance at getting in sniper school, is there even a chance to go recon without being in regiment?

How shitty is basic training for the infantry in the army vs other training.
Does it start out hard as fuck and then get easier, or does it just perpetually get worse the further in you get?

Kid just stop. You dont know what you want. You say you want sniper how the fuck do you know? And when you say recon, do you mean the recon portion of ranger regiment?

i didn't mean to abstain from lifting. What i said was to stay away from lifting too hard. i.e. in the pursuit of gains

ya and youre completely wrong.

Gains = strength
Strength = endurance
Endurance = winning

More like lift for strength and endurance and not for looks.
You absolutely need to lift for any SOF unit

It's basically red phase all the way until you graduate.
