Mini 14 does not have a m14 gas system, not Even a garand system.
The mini ejects gas into the handguard, the op rod is the cylinder.

M14 and garand has a proper closed piston cylinder system where gas is ejected from the gas block

The M14 has a self regulating short stroke piston.

The garand just has gas impinging against the tip of the operating rod.

Apparently they wanted a gas system like the Garand or M14 in the Mini-14 but it just wasn't working so they settled on a system similar to the M1 carbine instead. I'm not sure why, but Jim Sullivan mentioned it in an interview.

I guess I was trying to say the Mini 14 is pretty close in operation to the garand and the M14 is a completely different animal on its own being a short stroke piston system.

Ingram managed to do it with his SAM series of rifles but it was killed by good old Bill Ruger and Jim Sullivan beating him to the punch with the popularity of the mini.
