Comes out to just over 5lbs including sling and optic.

It is what the US military has used for almost two generations. The M16/AR family has been around for almost 62 years. An icon of the Draft Era war in Vietnam and the short version, the M4, is associated with the last 20 years of struggle against non-state actors.
It ended up on the less fucked side after the Cold War ended and has become focal point of US firearms ownership because some can legitimately claim their dad, grandpa or great-grandpa carried one in war or they carried one while they were in uniform. It considered a birthright or some shit.
In its essential form it is very light and flat shooting with little recoil and a big mag. Desirable qualities in a combat weapon. Face it though, the vast majority of AR-15s in the US have never been, and probably never will, be fired intentionally at a living person. Which is why gun people love it, they get to play dress up like tweenage girls dreaming about what to wear at their wedding to a boy pop idol.
