Does hazing in the military serve any constructive purpose? For those of you who have been hazed...

Moderated hazing is important to break people down and get people working as a group. Extreme hazing that 3rd worlders pride themselves in (IE: Russian Dedovshchina, South American militarys lighting people on fire, Filipinos beating people to death for not completing a task on time) is useless flashy shit that doesnt have any practical benefit outside of impressing normies.

Not mil but went though plenty of hazing in sports and just growing up. Definitely made me stronger emotionally, and bonded with teammates and friends because of it.

Hazing is only useful so long as it is administered fairly, uniformily, and with a definitive "now you will no longer be hazed" point with a very visible path to get there.

Most militaries institute this as training. You are making people do things they dont want to do under threat of physical or social discomfort.

But there exist some things that need to be experienced or lived to take hold.

You can train a fuckhead to shoot a gun, can you train a fuckhead to wake up early to man a watch because his offgoing relief just got tasked with being platoon sergeant after he caught a stray round?

No. You haze him so he understands things suck but the more competant we all are the better we can handle the unexpected.

There is no such thing as “moderated hazing”

Because no one wants to seem weak, no one questions it. And if you do question it, you'll get baseless justifications.
One pretext for hazing is "team building" but there are better ways to do that. The best way to build team cohesion is to give a squad of X number of men a challenging yet reasonable objective e.g go from point A to point B with a map and compass. After that's completed, give them pointers and go over any mistakes made. Finally, repeat the process and continually challenge them until they become a team and not just a mess of soldiers.

By the time I made Sergeant in the Marine Infantry such an event that used to literally be regular every day life in the barracks for anyone who dared have entered the military a few months behind somebody else a court martial level offense. Rightly so. I spent the first year in fleet fantasizing about wiping out my NCOs or spitting in thier face if they ever needed my help during the upcoming deployment.

Waking your squad up at 0400 every morning for a 5 mile ruck run you will be leading because two members fell out of a hike last week is acceptable hazing. It serves a purpose, its correcting a deficiency, your command knows it is ocurring, they condone it, and you have a very miserable corpsmen who wishes he was better at inventing excuses to hang out at BAS all day along to make sure nobody is hurt. Nobody falls out of the next hike, nobody gets hurt, and nobody on the firing line later that week is thinking about shooting thier NCOs or themselves. You know that if you need one of your guys they respect you, and will do anything to help you, and they know that while you might be an asshole, youd still do anything to help them.
