People say they don't exist because how they are portrayed in the media doesn't exist. They are not non-stop warfare 30-caliber clip machine guns. They are an important step in weapons development because of a development in small unit tactics. The military uses the category of rifles because they suit well with that tactic, not because it's the most "powerful type of gun in the world" or whatever kind of bullshit you hear in media. The term exists in the commercial space solely due to ignorance. It's a convenient boogeyman. Politicians can rile against them and appeal to the ignorant. Then when the ignorant ask for them to be banned allow the politicians to figured out the details for them, due to their ignorance. The politicians then get power. Weapons manufacturers, lobby groups, rich retards, etc. all give them kickbacks to make sure whatever is, or is not, on the list of banned weapons/features. Democracy is predicated on an informed public, and "assault rifle", in its current usage, is an affront to that. Which is why people here, and in the community as a whole, look down on people who use the term unironically.

"Assault rifles" are defined by the ATF and military as full auto with select fire. The AR-15 is semi auto, meaning one shot per pull of the trigger.
