If the elevator can lift the F-35B, doesn't seem that difficult. Just make sure the deck can handle the heat.

What happens if you don't modify the deck? Whatcan happens besides a few cracks?

Nothing, just tarmac damage, modern decks are steel plus a layer of asphaltic

They need to build a ramp on the bow

It's already an aircraft carrier

Retrofitting a ramp seems like it would be overly expensive and difficult.

It'd be a fairly easy conversion, and no doubt the plans were drawn up while the ship was being designed. The kit is probably already fabbed up and sitting in a warehouse in Nippon somewhere, probably well less than a year duration to install.

Fixed wing aircraft carrier you mean? It was provisioned for STOVL operations in the design. Supposedly, they can do the hardware conversion within 3 months.
Bit more to it than that. There's all sorts of complex stuff to consider, such a munitions bunkering, maintenance bays, radar software/hardware to be upgrade to support fixed wing ops etc etc.
But clearly this was considered ahead of time.
It depends on how the deck was constructed, but you could seriously cause damage to the deck and deck structure through not only the heat, but the downwards force of the F-35B's engine. Though thankfully, the JSDF has already planned ahead.
Why?

>So how exactly are they supposed to turn this into an aircraft carrier??

By God-Emperors blessing

Next you'll be telling me they have a secret nuclear weapons program.

They're one of the few nations who could produce up a deployable weapon within two years.

They already had one back in WW2 bruh

pretty sure they are banned from doing that.

A ban that should not be uplifted because two of their enemies in WW2 are now their ally.

Its not a carrier. They have the option to buy v-22's for aerial refueling if they ever decide to buy a full-size carrier. They probably want it to support other operations.

>Retrofitting a ramp seems like it would be overly expensive and difficult.

that's the complete opposite of the benefits offered by a ramp.

They are not. The constitution is very specific with language used.
It is a carrier by definition.

Found the chink

They're not banned from doing it at all. You can argue Article 9 may restrict it (though they've reinterpreted it to allow offensive weaponry so probably not), but that's an internal matter and neither the UK or the US have any treaties placing limitations on the Japanese military. You might be thinking of the Germans, who are technically limited to no more than 370,000 military personnel (but no one cares because Germany doesn't have or want anywhere near that many troops).

This. Just because it suits the US to have a more powerful ally, it does not help the region to have a more militaristic Japan - a nation with a history of aggression against it's neighbours. Even South Korea is against it, not to mention China who suffered horrifically at the hands of the Japanese yet get next to no recognition of that in comparison to the [REDACTED].

So are you Vatnik, or a Chang?

>The constitution is very specific with language used.
Uh no, Article 9 is very broad and basically says Japan will not engage in any warfare.

>ARTICLE 9. (1) Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.
>(2) In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
It is specific in the sense that if you read it literally, Article 9 very clearly means Japan renounces war or any military. However it is not specific at all if you meant that Article 9 kept a list of equipment that was allowed and not allowed.

They could just repeal article 9

>Japan - a nation with a history of aggression against it's neighbours.
Japan has invaded its neighbors exactly twice in its entire history, the Imjin War and the collection of conflicts against China in early 20th century.

It's what Abe wants

reuters.com/article/us-japan-government-constitution/japans-abe-hopes-for-reform-of-pacifist-charter-by-2020-idUSKBN17Z0BH

>You might be thinking of the Germans, who are technically limited to no more than 370,000 military personnel (but no one cares because Germany doesn't have or want anywhere near that many troops).

You're right i confused the two.

However, I do not think Japan should be expanding it's force projection capabilities just because some of it's previous enemies are now Allies.

The Chinese have done a pretty good job of keeping to themselves in comparison to other major powers.

Sure the island issue is tricky - but no one else has a more valid claim to the islands as they are technically in international waters.

And to be honest in China it's a fairly minor issue.

Building up military might around China is just proding them in the hope of a new cold war-style arms race.

Who Cares

Japanese Wall when

I'm a brit history graduate who does not want to see the mistakes on the last 50 years repeated just because we need a dick-waving contest with someone we'll never fight.

JMSDF is focused more on Diesel Electric attack subs.

Infact, I wish I could tell you how JMSDF and USN use them for training.

We are talking *specifically* about carriers, nothing else.
mod.go.jp/e/d_act/d_policy/dp01.html
CHAPTER Ⅱ. RENUNCIATION OF WAR
Article 9.
The Government’s View on Article 9 of the Constitution
1 Permitted Self-Defense Capability
>The possession of armaments deemed to be offensive weapons designed to be used only for the mass destruction of another country, which would, by definition, exceed the minimum necessary level, is not permissible under any circumstances. For example, the SDF is not allowed to possess intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), long-range strategic bombers, or attack aircraft carriers.
>attack aircraft carriers.
The constitution allows for aircraft carriers which do not have "attack" (defined by the Japanese government) capability.

>I'm a brit history graduate

No one asked for your opinion you braindead paki faggot. Why do you arrogant westerners believe that their opinions on Asian affairs matter? Perhaps, i'm really not taking any foreign advice on this matter especially from someone in a country that submissively ceded Hong Kong to China within the last 30 years.

>Japan has invaded its neighbors exactly twice in its entire history,

Thats plain wrong. Pic related - and thats JUST WW2

Attached: wc21_japempirem.jpg (865x640, 120K)

Then as a history graduate, you should be disappointed in yourself for willfully ignoring / misinterpreting what's very clearly written.

>brit history graduate
So you have no job

>brit angry that he can't be nationalistic in his own country without being arrested for hate speech

If you count one outbreak as multiple, Japan would still rank at bottom in terms of aggressiveness compared to other large nations. Japan in its 2000 year history had two periods of militarist expansionism. Meanwhile, a country like Germany started two world wars within 50 years of its existence.

I can see them starting the modifications with the justification of allowing Marine F-35Bs to operate from them, and by 2020 the language will likely be revised and orders of Japanese F-35Bs can be made.

>No one asked for your opinion you braindead paki faggot.

Thats not how the internet works friendo.

>Why do you arrogant westerners believe that their opinions on Asian affairs matter?

because we are mostly impartial, and like it or not, we have influence over you.

>Perhaps, i'm really not taking any foreign advice on this matter especially from someone in a country that submissively ceded Hong Kong to China within the last 30 years.

The lease of Hong Kong elapsed, what did you expect us to do? hold it by force just for the sake of it?

Instead we imposed terms on China that means Hong Kong is now a partial democracy that is widly discussed in China and has caused much dissent on the mainland by students that want similar choices.

You don't just defeat opponents with military might. Soft power is king.

I have nothing against Japan, the UK and Japan have good relations. But i don't thing giving Japan a token force of carrier aircraft is worth the political fallout for the region.

>b b but were not as bad as Germany

>i i if we invade lots of people at once it only counts as one invasion

This is literally you.

>Instead we imposed terms on China that means Hong Kong is now a partial democracy

That votes from candidates literally hand-picked by chinese communist party

No. The language already allows it.

You are literally making shit up as you go along.
>But i don't thing giving Japan a token force of carrier aircraft is worth the political fallout for the region.
It already has a carrier force. FOUR of them.

>soft power
Yeah you've got a whole lot of soft power yourself buddy

>The Chinese have done a pretty good job of keeping to themselves in comparison to other major powers.

>>i i if we invade lots of people at once it only counts as one invasion
But that's correct?

There's no way Hyuga-class can be converted into carriers. It's doubtful that even the Izumo can do that.

The Russian did that with the aircraft carrier that they sold to India.

@37369790
(You)

>be Japan
>sperg out on US once because of oil embargo
>get nuked twice and lose most rights to a military
>more than 70 years later still have limited military that bothers nobody

>be Germany
>fuck over Europe and the rest of the world multiple times
>military only taken away once
>ignore League of Nations and make new military anyways
>fuck over the world again
>still get military
>still fucking over Europe
Explain this shit

Give me a proper (You), faggot.

Japan has a larger military than Germany.

The japs should buy Harriers to fill the gap while the F35 gets in

>because we are mostly impartial, and like it or not, we have influence over you.
This would be incredible if an Amerifat said it, when some British retard says it it ascends into another realm of delusion post-colonial aspiration

>The lease of Hong Kong elapsed, what did you expect us to do? hold it by force just for the sake of it?

The concession of HK conclusively marked the death of your empire and made clear your new existence as a background voice in world politics. This is all to say that you have no authority in this matter coming from a rather irrelevant has-been state

>Instead we imposed terms on China that means Hong Kong is now a partial democracy that is widly discussed in China and has caused much dissent on the mainland by students that want similar choices.
>I have nothing against Japan, the UK and Japan have good relations. But i don't thing giving Japan a token force of carrier aircraft is worth the political fallout for the region.

Ah yes, the HK that has been brought entirely into the Chinese fold. Your terms are as effete as your country and people are. Please drop all pretense of power and authority in this discussion as it has become unbearably miserable to watch for the rest of us.

>You don't just defeat opponents with military might. Soft power is king.
Fascinating comment coming from a nation that is now only known for being America's slavish minion state.

Attached: Rotten-Teeth-5.png (1111x548, 709K)

Japan spent more on defense than most of Asia. Probably because their weapon and salary are expensive as fuck.

But their military is till bigger than German.

German army is cuck army.

Seems pointless to buy them for just a few years.

Though I doubt Japan will be able to buy any Bs until those still waiting for their orders get a large chunk of them.

>It already has a carrier force. FOUR of them.

Ships that launch helicopters are aircraft carriers now?

>Yeah you've got a whole lot of soft power yourself buddy

Thanks, it comes with being the financial capital of the world and the head of the Commonwealth of nations.

Compare China's foreign policy to that of Russia, India, Pakistan, the US, Uk ect ect.

despite intelligence and cyber efforts, they are very isolationist. Most of their money spent on foreign countries has been in development, particularly in east africa.

It's not.

Hitler didn't only Invade Poland. No one in Russia, France, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Norway ect ect sit and think that Germany hasn't shown aggression to them.

I am not, and i would not try to say Hong Kong is a functional democracy. But the fact that CHina has to go through the process of allowing the people a choice is hugely powerful.

The election outcome is far less important than the social effect that having one region with "elections".

The demand for choice is growing rapidly and has been since the 1990's.

Japan can make its own SVTOL fighters. They are one of the most advanced countries in the world.

Go back to your containment board if you're incapable of having an adult conversation. You're not worth my time.

They already dropped their 5th gen fighter to buy F-35A

British teeth are literally better than Japanese teeth you arsewounded mong.

Because it would be cheaper to, not becaus they lacked the ability

I don't converse with toothless Muslims. Go throw your acid elsewhere and take your brain damaged attempt at geopolitical analysis with you.

>They are one of the most advanced countries in the world.

It's not the 90's anymore.

Korea has undisputedly replaced Japan as an innovator in consumer technology - with the exception of cars.

>Ships that launch helicopters are aircraft carriers now?
Yes.
They are design carrying and operating aircraft.

Listen, the depth of your defence knowledge is lacking, completely lacking - the fact that you spewing out all this retarded diatribe demonstrates this.

>I don't converse with toothless Muslims. Go throw your acid elsewhere

I don't play ARMA at all.

I don't know if you realise this or not, but helos are aircraft.

>Korea has undisputedly replaced Japan as an innovator in consumer technology
Using Japanese and American technology patents??

The reason the US wants Japan to increase its military spending is because of the Lockheed-plants within the government.

Ah yes, how to be disingenuous 101.

London has more than twice the Foreign exchange of it's closest Rival (New york)

Depsite only being used by 65 million people £ Stirling is the 4th most used currency in the world.

London, via Hong Kong is where China has chosen to start it's exploits on the international market.

They wouldn't use it as an aircraft carrier, that goes against the way that their doctrine is evolving.
The Izumo and Kaga will be by all intents and purposes an LHA capable of acting as a Japanese ARG/ESG with the Osumi Classes acting as LSDs to a degree. I'm expecting an increase in V-22 orders, some type of LPD being announced in the coming years, and 40ish F-35Bs to be ordered.

Why doesn't Japan just lease an air force base in the Philippines?

Can't do a sneak attack on pearl harbor with an island

LCS was designed from the outset to operate multiple aircraft to complete its objective.

By your definition "They are design carrying and operating aircraft."

They are aircraft carriers.

Meanwhile in the real world you need to operate fixed wing aircraft to count as an aircraft carrier. Japan has none of these ships.

And only one ship that could be converted to operate in that way. However Spanish and Italian aircraft carriers would still be superior in that role.

Strengthen/reinforce the flight deck to handle the heat of the jet exhaust. They may also have to adjust the layout of the hangar and add fuel storage. Also, munitions bunkers for the F35's armaments.

pretty cool

No, I'm sorry. You are being disingenuous and you know it. To compare a 3000 ton ship and a 30000 one, is just ridiculous and a overt simplification.

Pretty sure it's just too short of Operate F35B with anything other than a token loadout. It's about 65% the length of QE, with no ramp.

It's 200 feet short of the wasp class too.

Boatslut time

Attached: izumo.jpg (594x700, 92K)

Keep in mind that the Wasps and Tarawa classes, both operated typically 6 harriers, which is more or less sufficient for CAP or strike.

I'm not being disingenuous at all.

Japan has no fixed-wing capability. Fixed wing is an essential requirement to be an aircraft carrier.

Hyuga carries 3 aircraft - 1 more than LCS or most modern destroyers.

Izumo carries 7. I can find dozens of landing and support ships with more aviation facilities.

>QE: 920ft
>Wasp: 843ft
>America: 844ft
>Izumo: 814ft

It's not that significant.

We're not talking about Izumo. He is posted hyuga. I probably shouldn't have replied to all three.
