So would 18" really not be enough of gain over a 16" to be worth the extra weight and length then?
For some reason the 18" seems attractive to me, but I've never really tried handling one, and I know that my 16" junker is a lot quicker to swing around than my Persian Mauser.

But what about the extra length of putting the muzzle device on the 16" then?

It would really depend on your entire build. If I remember correctly you'll gain less than 200 fps from that additional 2". If you're just dead set on it, then have at it. But will it be your only rifle? Will it be your go-to? Is that additional 2" more detrimental than it's advantages? These are questions you need to ask yourself since only you know what you'll be doing with your rifle.

with the 14.5" you need a muzzle device of at least 1.5" that does nothing but get you to the legal length requirement
BUT...
with the 16" you can use literally any fucking muzzle device you want

14.5" with even the shortest muzzel device gets you a 16" length with 14" balistics

16" will be just a little longer with the ballistic benefits that come with it
