Hey, I'm very new to gun ownership and today I put up a down payment on a 1886 Mauser. I wasn't too knowledgeable of what I was getting myself into, I just "wanted" this gun if that makes sense. So will any 8mm Mauser ammunition work? How often should I clean it and how? Is it a very reliable gun? Any help would be appreciated.
First time buying a gun
I can't help you but it sounds like a bad idea to purchase an old firearm before knowing much about firearm.
Still if what you are getting is a well preserved firearm then you really have a nice vintage rifle.
Take it to a gunsmith and pay him his $50 and ask him to clean it and make sure it is safe to shoot. Explain you're a newbie, and he'll help you. You're reinforcements, not a noob.
Welcome to the shooting sports. You'll get your secret decoder ring next week in the mail.
Ah jeez, now I'm pretty nervous about my decision. Even if it can't fire I'm happy with it, but I hope it can.
Thanks for the tip! I'll do that.
No, not all mausers fire the same cartridge.
Tell me more about this rifle and maybe I can help you determine cartridge.
come 2 india bby

This is what it says on the record of sale I received. Hopefully this helps.
It's not a Mauser, it's a Kropatschek. In 8mm Kropatschek. It shoots black powder rimmed rounds. It's almost definitely a Portuguese contract rifle that probably saw service in colonial Africa during WWI.
Cool gun, but getting the cartridges to shoot it will be a total birch whether you handload them from scratch, or buy them from somewhere.
>buying milsurp and not ARs, and standard capacity magazines so many years after the current year
>1886 Mauser
>8mm Mauser
Ooooooooh boy this is gunna be good
I'm fucked aren't I? Getting ammunition for this gun will be nearly impossible to get right?
Post a picture of your gun faggot
Here is it

Get your money back dude, since you're a novice your just going to have a wall hanger. Or you could hypothetically spend some money and get into reloading.
You're right. I'll go down and see what I can do, since they did mislabel it. Thanks for all you're help.
Well tecnically speaking their tag wasnt mislabeled if all it said was "8". But if some one told you it was 8mm Mauser thats wrong
The reason I was so attracted to it was because it said "Mauser" on the tag. I came here because the paperwork was different than what I saw on the tag.
Okay then yeah they mis marked that shit. Im sure they will put your money towards another Milsurp in there you'll like!
If you only wanted it cause its a Mauser you gotta understand Mauser made hundreds of different variants of rifles and pistols. Just cause its a Mauser doesn't mean its good. Old milsurp is not something to just jump into without at least a little knowledge
I want it. Personally, even if it's a wall hanger, it's a cool fucking old gun that not that many people have. My first milsurp was a Turkish 1893 Mauser that I'm terrified to shoot because of how loose the bolt is when locked in the receiver, but it's still a very special gun to me.

Makes you wonder what the fuck someone did to it considering the kind of crazy hot loads of 8mm Mauser the Turks used and what the rifle had to have been rated for.
Milsurpfag here, I'd rather buy literally any milsurp gun to add to my collection, before I'd buy a second AR. Just because they're popular as fuck doesn't mean we're all into them
Well, it is Turkish. I'm sure it's just a matter of its age, and probably zero attention from an armorer post re chambering.
If you're a PA boi I'd sell you one of my mosins for 150.
Autistic.
Will snipe during SHTF and use wood for my fire, shirt off body to clean my hi point and your intestines to make condoms for my dingus.
Also, my doggos love meat.
Sadly I'm in California.
Is it worth 780$ including taxes?
I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you get well soon!
Just got an 1891 argie, it's beautiful, but I'm already CCWing and have an SKS/AR Poorfield
Welcome friendo enjoy that surp
I've read through a bit of the thread and I would recommend if you are able to get the money back if you still want to look into an old Mauser look at some of these South American 1890s models those are all smokeless powder and the rounds are not unobtainium
