I just got a nice fat tax refund and some overtime money, and I'd like to get some optics for my AR-15. I've got an old 3x-9x hunting rifle scope right now which was just kinda my "okay, i have it might as well put it on" thing, but I'd like something that works well for close range (home defense) 1x for quick aquisition, but that I could shift up to say, 3x for target plinking at the range.
Would also like something that isn't going to absolutely destroy the bank like a $3500 pic related acog.
Just buy a Burris 1-4x. Or do what I did and buy the primary arms 4x prism scope and drop one a mini red dot on top for closer stuff. I bought the Truglo mini red dot, and it's quite nice, auto-shutoff and lots of brightness settings, only gripe is that it's a bitch to push both buttons to turn it off.

If you don't have astigmatism and can use red dots ok, there are a number of excellent budget options.
Holosun/Primary Arms MD-ADS are excellent options. (The Ukrainians have been photographed using these sights in the war there, interestingly: a mid-tier military using a mid-tier optic.) Get a good quick-detach mount, like a Larue if you want, for if you'd like to upgrade to an Aimpoint T1/T2 later. Primary Arms sells a magnifier combo with it, so you can go up to 3x if you'd like.

What if you do have astigmatism?

This thing is $424 and seems nice. Comes with a supposedly nice red dot on top, adjustable 1x to 4x which seems nice, and illuminated reticle
Decent price or should I wait for a sale to pop up?
burris, vortex, and primary arms all make some form of 1-4, 1-6, or 1-8 scope for under $400. All would be an excellent option.

>trijicon >$3500
what you pictured is like $1500 MSRP, and maybe $1200ish on Amazon
the only trijicon shit that gets $3k plus is the 6x48 stuff and their thermals

Just buy a chink ACOG. They make exact copies for 100$. Fiberoptic illumination and prism optic (make sure it's really fiber and prism) youtube.com/watch?v=mUj2BiacsD0

>What if you do have astigmatism? Guns are not your hobby, sorry.
>tax refund >waste it on optics you'll never use idiot it's not "free money". it's money that you should have had throughout the year but due to your poor planning you get in one lump sum at the end of the year. you should put it in your savings or use it to pay off some of the credit card debt you undoubtedly have you fucken dunce reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
>Would also like something that isn't going to absolutely destroy the bank like a $3500 pic related acog. what a poorfag

I finally looked through a 1.5 mini and I'm in love. Literally every long gun should have one if not using greater magnification.

Dude that 3.5x ACOG can be had for less than 1k. I have the TA31 4x and the 3.5x has a lot better eye relief. With the A2 solid stock on the old M16A1 you almost had to have the opitc hanging off the back of the upper reciever to get proper eye relief.
Skip the 3.5x ACOG and get the 3x. It's pretty much the perfect optic for a lightweight rifle.

Anything other than an LED red dot. Holographic sights are definitely better for stigmatisms, but try before buying. I looked at a UH-1 recently and it looked pretty sharp. Anything with an etched reticle is fine.

I've had one for 10 years, on a 16 inch AR or sometimes a Inrange Bulgarian AKS-74. Is love.

Trijicon makes the best ACOGs money can buy. I have one of these and I love it. Can't wait to get another. You can see the recticle pattern with both eyes open.
Sorry man. It’s still the go to for those doing serious work with their rifles.

EOTech vs Trijicon ? What do you think?

The ACOG is wicked light weight and has great FOV but is slow at 50 yards and closer. The ACSS reticle however is freaking awesome. I just hate the ACOG’s super short eye relief. But that’s me. If you want to use it as an up close optic it works but not great. You can put an RMR on it but it’s kinda clumsy.
Personally I like the Eotech “-2” variants with the 2nd BDC dot. Super fast for 50 yards and closer. 3x mag makes shots up to 200 a breeze. If I’m trying to go farther than that, I probably need a different gun.
Totally anecdotal and totally my opinion. Try them both out, see what you like. The ACOG is a great optic. I just personally think it’s not as flexible. Although the ACSS reticle helps.

Just get the scope, the 1x is fine for close range. Don't worry about a rmr style dot if you're going 1-4.
I just got a vortex strike eagle 1-6. Only one range session so far but i really liked it. Its a budget optic at about 3 bills plus mount. I picked it up to replace my eotech becuae i am an astigmatism. Lasik corrected, bit holos wash out a little for me. Anyway. What i really like about it is how good it looks at 1x. Both eyes open and it feels just as fast and automatic as the holosight did, then it can dial in all the way to 6x. Reticle has rangefinding markers and drop hashes for 3,4,5, and 600 yds. Nice all around optic.
No doudt the acog is clearer and tougher, but the vortex is fine for range larping.

>you almost had to have the opitc hanging off the back of the upper reciever to get proper eye relief. That's what I've got mine doing. I'm kinda jelly of all the BAC ACOGs but then I like the simpleness of the TA31.
