Long barrel cleaning

Who is the better cleaning tool, a bore snake or a cleaning rod?

Bore snek is more fun to use

I don’t like the idea of using a cleaning rod on a precision rifle without a bore guide, but I do it anyway. Boresnakes are super easy though, I use them on my AR’s. That being said, I usually push a patch of hoppes #9 through first, then follow it up with the boresnake. Something about running a boresnake dry puts me off.

one piece rod with a parker hale style jag

I just use cheap guitar strings with Hoppes dipped rags

if you use it often a boresnake is better, if you are a degenerate who lets deposits build up you will need the rod

bore chain

I use both. Bore snakes are super easy to pull through and get solvent soaking into shit, but I always finish with patches and a rod.

Boresnake!
Unless you've gotten to the point where you have deposits. Then you need to get a cleaning rod and also to rethink your life as to how you let this happen.

Fucking germans.
Over a engineering everything they can.

Cleaning rod. i'm convinced a boresnake does nothing. If it did something, it would come out dirty.

Just gives me goosebumps thinking about those chains dragging across the crown

Goddamn so that's what I can use with my old ones thanka user

I don't use bore snakes because the crap from previous uses collect on them and it doesn't seem like a good idea to send it through the barrel repeatedly.

if you dont get to the point where you get deposits your not using your gun. unless your idea of a rangetrip is 1-2 boxes of ammo and its time to go home.
500 rounds of buildup and a boresnake does nothing.
boresnakes fine for a touch up but a rod is required.

they gotta be soft aluminum or something. germans aren't usually retarded. usually.

Thats why you put the Hoppes on the boresnake. I usually do it right before the bristles, just give it a nice little soak.

Boresnake all the way, unless you have hand clean with rods and patches. Otherwise though, don't waste your time deep cleaning.

Does your boresnake have a brush? Also, get a white one, throw 1000 through your rifle, and then drag it through, then see if its dirty.

Remember, aluminum oxide (coats almost all aluminum) is quite hard and will scratch steel even if the underlying aluminum is a softer metal.

Bore snek. Why?
>Easy to store
>doesn’t take up much space
>if too short you can cut the string and the tie in more parachord

This. It’s a brush and buffer in one.

Never really thought of doing that as I figured the boresnake would just get dirty as shit. How do you wash it after?

I use otis cords. Because i have broken too many rods trying to man handle a stuck brush or patch out.

I've used, and have a bunch of, the hoppes ones with the brass sharp bits embedded in the cord - doesn't seem like it works. I've moved back to just cleaning with a one piece Dewey rod, jags, and brass brushes - tried the nylon brushes and they don't do much.

Throw them in the washing machine (by themselves obviously). Alternatively, if you have a small mesh bag you can run them through the dishwasher (also by themselves).

Rod is more versatile and will do a much better job of getting all the accumulated filth out of it rapidly, and also functions as a squib/stuck case/stuck wad remover. Also they're your ONLY choice for .17 and .20cal firearms.
Good 1-piece rods such as Possum Hollow or Dewey can also be used as beating sticks in a pinch, they're beefy.
Basically it's the best at everything cleaning related.

Bore snakes are convenient but do an inferior job at everything but being convenient.

Both
I use brush to free up the crus
then bore snake to get it out
Repeat if necessary
Then wipe clean
Hoppes 9 all the way

This is the best and most correct answer in the thread.

So I spilled a small full bottle of hoppes (6 or 8oz?) - how long until the smell goes away? It's been two days...

I prefer rods, because I clean my guns only when necessary. A snake would be ineffective.

It never goes away and why would you want it to?

Dewey rod with bore guide

Spilled a couple drops in the back of my SUV like 7 years ago. Seriously, like maybe 1/80th of an ounce.

I can still smell it if the car sits in the sun despite using car fresheners.

I guess I'll have to sell the house. If it wasn't the living room, it wouldn't be so bad

It's a good smell, and normies won't know what it is.

All you did was christen the house in the name of the Cube.

You'll stop smelling it after 3 weeks
I poured more on my carpet cause i like my room smelling like banana

Rod. To me it seems easier to use and better at actually getting your rifling looking nice and shiny. I brush the hell out of the bore, then run some patches with solvent, then brush again, few more patches of solvent to wipe away the remaining shit and make sure the rifling looks good and store it away.

Ive used bore brushes to finish up with cleaning, to give the bore one more sweep to make sure extra solvent is wiped up and any loose residue is taken out as well.

Lewd

If you don't use them in conjunction with eachother you're a dumbass who doesn't know what he's doing and probably learned about guns from CoD.

I put mine in an old sock and toss it on the gentle cycle in the washing machine along with my cleaning rags. Then hang to air dry.

A one piece cleaning rod is best. If it's really smooth, you can even use it as a sounding rod later.
