Supposedly the ATF set the minimum length of shotgun barrels to be 18" for sporting purposes on the premise that 18" was the length for a 2.75" shotgun shell to burn all its powder successfully. Are there reasons to keep a shotgun barrel longer than 18" besides the recommended 18.5" length to prevent being hassled about the barrel being shorter than 18"?

what model shotgun is that and what is are those pouches you are using? For research purposes?

Model unrelated. I have 30" barrel on a single shot break action 12G and it completely destroys my shoulder every time I fire it. While it patterns tight without a choke, it's heavy to carry and I already have a 36" barrel long shotgun I could use if I wanted a long one. I think those pouches are AR15 cleaning kits according to the thread I got the image from.

I'm sorry but 12 guage's don't destroy shoulders unless it's the shoulder of a faggot.

No need to apologize my dude, I'm a skeleton and would probably do better with a kid caliber like .410

Single barrel, break action shotguns destroy shoulders worse than any other kind of shotgun, try a pump or especially a semi if you want to blast buckshot all day successfully

Got a thick pad on it already?

I'll look at a Maverick 88 or one of those Steven pumps thanks bro
nah just straight wood at the moment, maybe that's my problem

longer barrels are good for clays and birds, extra length and weight helps with following the target smoothly
A lighter gun is going to have more felt recoil
Looks like a mossberg 500(safety on top of reciever) with a heat shield then a bunch of GI style shell pouches rothco.com/product/rothco-gi-type-enhanced-shotgun-shell-pouch

gay try 10 guage

I don't know where you heard that, but it's bullshit in several ways.
>Are there reasons to keep a shotgun barrel longer than 18"
Yes, swing. Also a modest increase in velocity, if you care about that.
So your shotgun is hurting you to fire, and you want to reduce weight so it kicks even harder?
Either you're incredibly tiny and frail (i.e. smaller than a normal 12-year old boy) and need to shoot less powerful ammo (either 20 gauge, or low-recoil/minishells in your 12-gauge) or you just need to learn to shoot before you go chopping on your barrel. I'm sure somebody already told you to hold the stock tight into your shoulder.

>I don't know where you heard that, but it's bullshit in several ways.
well go figure, I heard it on Jow Forums
>you just need to learn to shoot before you go chopping on your barrel
solid advice, I'm going to give this a try after getting a rubber buttstock. Wish me luck dudes

>10G and not 2 bore
wow mega fucking gay

Accuracy

Soak those things and get out the dremel.

Newfag, I ....

Son, you are dissapoint?

Lol a 12 gauge will wallop the shit out of you if you put some hefty loads in there. Get a buttpad. Does a ton to help mitigate recoil.

1: If you're hunting birds or shooting clays then the bead being further out helps with accuracy.

2: If you're firing it without hearing protection then the longer barrel will both give the gasses more time to expand before leaving the barrel and in addition to that have the sound originate however many inches further away from your ears. It's still not a good idea to fire a long barrel shotgun without hearing protection, but it shouldn't cause as much hearing damage as firing one with an 18" barrel.

3: Barrels will always go at least as long as the magazine tube (if the gun has one), so if you want a higher capacity (8+ or so) then you will need a slightly longer barrel (20" instead of 18").

What the fuck kind of fuddlore is this?

>ATF setting barrel length for shotguns
>doesn't know what the National Firearms Act of 1934 is
>ATF wasn't an independent agency until 1972 and had no regulatory authority like it does now before then.

Are you new here? Where did you hear this fuddlore from?

You do know that eating more and moving progressively heavier objects can fix that right?
You aren't stuck that way.

12g gets most of its velocity by 10”.
The difference between 26” and 32” of barrel is about 10 FPS. Long barrels are fuddlore of old mixed with actual handling benefits. A long barrel swings better, but that is combined with the old fashioned thinking of a longer barrel giving a better pattern. Hint: it doesn’t work that way.

I'm 6'1 150 pounds very thin and even 3 inch sluggos don't really bother me

eat more and lift, specificly chest and shoulders.
