I feel like they're edgy as fuck, especially through their videos, but that they make decent products.

Here's the rundown on Cold Steel. Most people on Jow Forums only know the new improved Cold Steel and aren't familiar with how they were before, thinking all the crap people talk about them is memes.

I just want to know their spears are effective and sturdy against something like elk or black bear and not just hogs, judging by the name.

There was a pro spear chucker that put a youtube video up throwing a spear at a black bear in Canada. Made quite a controversy. They've been talking about banning spear hunting now because of it. Video might still be up on youtube.
I always wanted to try deer or board hunting with a spear sometime. Wouldn't be surprised if it starts getting banned everywhere though.

The closest thing to a spear head from a hardware store is a forged masonry trowel. The bent handle shank would have to be heated redhot and reshaped, then the trowel would have to be rehardened, or you would have to grind the handle off and rivet the flat blade to a hardwood handle. The steel eould be properly tempered though, and would just beed some sharpening.

yes their spears are excellent because balance isn't an issue. it's just a spear head with a hollow that you put a stave into. A dowel will even work. then you can secure it with a screw or whatever.

Seems awfully stocky and short to be a throwing spear, only the blade is really designed to be part of a throwing spear, but the stock that the blade is attached to seems way too thick and heavy, at least it seems so to me.
Would make a good non-throwing spear though, if the blade was a bit longer and wider.

Or a Cold Steel Bushman knife - preferably bowie version. It can be affixed to the pole of your choosing.

tl;Dc = get a low carbon core and high carbon edge. heat it up real hot, wrap high carbon around low carbon, keep at blinding yellow, hammer it until it folds, do that again, do that again x 10, hammer edges until you get desired shape.

For proper handle get composite or compressed bo staff handle. ensure 1/3 of handle can be affixed inside of your new spear.
