I tried to in 2016. Made it to the end of selection but was dropped at the final cut. I thought I was a lock for sure because I had documented combat experience from my enlistment as a grunt Marine and i was in better physical shape than everyone else in my selection group except for maybe 2 other guys. They paid me 900 euro for the 4 weeks I spent there and i took the money to Germany and spent a few days banging eastern euro whores.
At least I can say I tried.

I'd like to serve in the military at some point, and the US military isn't really an option. I just have a long road to get in shape.
I've heard circumcision is considered to prevent cancers in the US, and is therefore quite common there.
They don't tell you the reason why you are cut. They just line you up and call out a list of names once or twice a week. If they call out your name that means you were cut, until the final cut in which they read out the names of the selected candidates and if your name isn't read then you are cut. After that I got all my stuff back, the cash, and a 1 way train ticket back to Paris.

Actually my french was pretty good, better than most other non-francophones there. Before i left for France I took 6 months off of work to do nothing but work out and study french. I completed all levels of french Rosetta Stone and I even took a french course at community college. I wasn't fluent by any means but i had a serviceable understanding of the language.
Its fine to join the legion, but please remember that

>little room for promotions
>NCOs and the like can and will beat you up
>the legion comes before your family
>its hard to get out
The upside is almost guaranteed firsthand combat experience and an adventure lifestyle. But first comes a year of gruelling and often cruel training. Really think about what you are grtting into before joining. Also learn french prior to joining as well.

It doesn't matter much. When I was in Ivory Coast I bunked with some legion guys, one of them was some kind of chink who only knew the very basics and was constantly using his pocket translator for daily conversation

You get out when your contract is over, same as the regular army. And you can always bail.
Have known a couple of guys who joined the Legion...all said the same thing..

Slavs, Nepalese, South Americans, Africans and Chinese are normally desirable to the Legion because they dont have a choice and thus likely to stay on for another 5 years.
