i understand the western perspective, religious leaders fall under a seperate geneva conventions category and are exempt from certain POW practices if captured, but if they are a combatant, does that mean they are no longer treated as religious leaders under international law if they are captured in battle?

As an Orthodox Christian myself this seems really sketchy. Priests CANNOT fight wars. If he kills someone, a priest is immediately defrocked and can never be a clergyman again. I've even heard of a priest being defrocked because of a fatal car accident caused by his negligence.

I'm atheist but I believe chaplains should be able to fight or have a combat role if they want to. I literally cannot find a downside to it.

It degrades their "objectivity" - when they partake in the "sins" of war on behalf of one side they have less legitimacy in their counsel. Especially considering, as many people tend to forget, that it is often the chaplains responsibility to perform last rites for the wounded dying enemy, when possible.
