I got my Bulgarian makarov from Sportsman's guide for $199 last year and looked basically brand new. Classic has them for $250 right now.

If you want something practical you could get an el cheapo AR with a carry handle for $400.
Otherwise you could save an extra $250 and get a Garand from the CMP.

You can get all sorts of neat stuff right now online. Just in the $300 or less range there's makarovs, p64s, P83s, Beretta 92S, Star BM, S&W 915, 669, 909, 908, 6904, Zastava tokarevs, those M70 .32ACP pistols, FEGs in .32ACP...
But since OP is a retard looking to spend more to some random fudd for instant gratification, go browse some pawn shops. You can probably find something cool or even your typical older used handgun or a used pump shotgun. Pic related, used gun finds I bought for $90 each.

Get a cap and ball revolver. $400 will cover your gun and a good amount of supplies.
I recommend an 1858 for a starter gun. Easy to clean and doesn't get gunked up with spent caps.
By far the cheapest "make friends at the range" gun you can get.

Oddly enough this was my first handgun. I've put about 1k rounds through it with no real issues and it shoots fairly accurate at 25 yards. Original magazines are kinda hard to find but they accept cz75 mags so it isn't really an issue.
