What's a good weapons suite for a recon unit vehicle? A couple of TOS-1 thermobaric rockets would be good. Guns below 57mm seems underpowered for reconnaissance units.

depends who youre fighting
Two fire and forget missiles in case the vic takes armored contact so it can get out of danger as soon as it does. As for infantry a simple Mk 19 or Ma Deuce should suffice.
What is this? What about recoil?
Taifun with 30 mm remote gun. It's air droppable and can be converted into an unmanned drone.
>underpowered for reconnaissance units
Recon units aren't supposed to get into firefights.
That's the joke I think.
>couple of TOS-1 thermobaric rockets would be good
Too heavy. You can have thermobaric AT-14 Spriggan/Tow-2. Best weapon for recon unit vehicle is a good optics, good communication and artillery brigade in it's rear.
>Guns below 57mm seems underpowered for reconnaissance units.
What on earth did you base that gem on.
Most current front-line vehicles do have protection against 30mm. Russian 30mm shells are not quite effective against infantry either. OP thinks that 57mm has better penetration, but, actually, those cannons that Russians are trying to sale have relatively low muzzle velocity. They are coming with remotely controlled shells and have selling point as a universal and deadly solution against infantry and small UAVs.
proper recon is done in an MBT
probably a couple of hellfires
gpmg, 40mm/m2 and tows/nlos spike er etc. suav. Oh and there's this thing called air support.
No need to make your vehicle memetic to compensate and only offer low quantity munition abd expensive guns only meant to weazle oil sheiks off their money.
Why do you need big gun for recon works?
well then, i'd say send them in on a battleship
Pure sex
Air support is great and all but when it takes two hours to arrive having the ability to respond a bit quicker can be handy
agreed this thing is amazing
>what is loitering

You mean 14.5mm AP, most modern vehicles are only resistant to about 20-25mm above that and only in the frontal arc. Unless your talking about your RECON vehicle trying to tackle tanks.
Apart from very light special forces recon units that operate out of jeeps and those vehicles without doors, modern day reconnaissance doctrine is about 'fighting for recon'. Meaning that recon elements are expected to fight for intelligence information and take fire and return fire with enemy units, like recon elements, screening units, or advance parties.
One example is Australia's new combat reconnaissance vehicle, with a 30mm gun and ATGMs.
Light recon and surveillance
>Unless your talking about your RECON vehicle trying to tackle tanks.
What else would it do?
Anyway, a recon vehicle needs to be able to carry at least six guys in the back.
