Just buy an AR. Switch out the stock for a Fagpul precision 'adjustable' stock instead of a collapsible one. Replace the standard flash hider with a good compensator/muzzle break which you should do anyways. Slap on a shitty sharkfin on the pistol grip (which you can slip off whenever no eyes around). Bam, you are featureless and don't need a bullet button abomination or register your funz as an 'assault weapon'. I don't think that's a good alternative, there is virtually no support for it. The area scr accomplishes the same thing while having basically all AR aftermarket available

A Mini-14 is pretty good if you get one that's made after 2006 (serials starting with 581).
You're in California, so you'll be restricted to 10rd magazines, but you could jungle-tape two mags to make for a quick and easy reload, the package of two 10rd mags together also being larger and easier to handle, almost the size of a 20 or 30 round magazine.

I don't know if you can get a Mini-14 with flash hider in Cali, but I suppose you could order one out of state, then ask them to have the hider removed by someone out of state, then have a muzzlebrake attached and pinned on.

The 10 round magazines are just plain state law and the fixed mag shit is only of you want a flash hider, unmolested pistol grip, underbarrel flare launcher, or other banned feature.
