Ricochet Injuries

Hi Jow Forums first time poster on this board. Today I got hit in the face by bullet ricochet from someone shooting an AR500 steel target with an AR-15 chambered with .223 from 15 yards away.
Anyone else have any ricochet experiences and how retarded were they to do this?

how bad did you get tore up?

how bad was it?

die you did?

What's your address? I'll kiss your booboo for yah

pics

the range I go to specifically set rules against shooting steel with rifle calibers from less than a hundred yards, I thought they were full of shit about ricochets but maybe not

I got minor splash back from close range pistol plate fun times... Then I got good and moved back a lot more...
> get good nerd

Steel targets should be angled to direct spalling downward.

Not too bad. It was right below my eye though and bled a lot. I go shooting quite a bit since I'm in the country but have never shot steel before. I was genuinely suprised.

It didn't go through?

do what this guy did next time.
were you wearing eye pro? if you dont i bet you will now

I'm not gonna post a pic of my face in Jow Forums but the target was private. I was at a friend's place and they have a couple acres out here in Oklahoma and my brother had just bought them the target.

I was thankfully. It was angled down slightly and hanging but it didn't really matter apparently it's a nice thick target too. Probably just have bad luck.

>were you wearing a ballistic mask? if you don't i bet you will now
The eyes are a tiny part of your face, you idiot, ricochet can remove your brain. If you don't have $200 to spend on a IIIA ballistic mask don't even shoot

Post a picture of just the wound, I wanna see it, not your entire face. That was pretty retarded btw this is absolutely correct. And to answer your original question I caught some bullet fragments right below my ass cheek in Iraq. It wasn't great, but I've had worse from doing metal work.

15 yard slanted plates with a pistol are slightly risky, rifle it's just dumb...

>oklahoma
God damnit dude, ill set up your steel for ypu if you let me shoot it

lol. maybe you want to wear a cool eye patch for the rest of your life, i dont,

>If you don't have $200 to spend on a IIIA ballistic mask don't even shoot
this, teebeehaych, desu.

Do you think your eyeballs are ricochet lightning rods?
>lol. maybe you want to wear a cool steel plate in your skull over the hole in your brain for the rest of your life, I don't.

Attached: s-l640.jpg (640x640, 22K)

Is this something people actually spend money on? Not saying it's stupid, but I don't even know those were a thing until just now. Always thought maintaining range condition such as backstop and wearing eye protection was good enough definitely a learning experience.

I dont get it are you making a point? or are you just a shill for ballistics masks?

if you're pretty sure you're going into a firefight you definitely want one of these, yes. People do really use them.

IIRC a mass shooter covered in armor had one of these on

Ballistic mask and kevlar suit, everyday.

>cover your eyes in case of BULLETS FLYING IN YOUR DIRECTION
>but don't actually guard your LIFE, just your vision

Naw. It pitted the target though and it's a nice target. Too bad I don't have a pic of it but I'm sure I could find one online

eyepro is flak protection at best you mongo

>not wanting to be able to rock the Big Boss/Pirate look
Look at this man and laugh.
Slightly amusing story, when I was innaArmy, one of our sister companies wanted to set up a pistol range. So they used regular pickets and just taped targets to it. They had 3 people catch ricochets before they realized how stupid of an idea it was.
No you don't, you want to be able to see. We're not at the point of having Army of Two type masks that stop all kinds of shit, but once we are I'll probably pony up for one.
Do you think eyepro stops bullets?

you do realize these are elastic collisions right?

>thinking flak can't penetrate your skull
I shiggy the thought.

Maybe if other o/k/lahomans have a faggy meet up my dude.

>bulletblocker.com/bullet-proof-clothing.html

What area of Oklahoma are you in? I'm in Choctaw. We just shot some tannerite piƱata as well.

>go to range
>get hit with richochets once in a while
Such is life

>No you don't, you want to be able to see. We're not at the point of having Army of Two type masks that stop all kinds of shit, but once we are I'll probably pony up for one.
It's IIIA. Not good enough for you? You can see through them, but not perfectly. Mass shooters and gangbangers don't have the same requirements for their "operations" that law enforcement or military personnel do.
>Do you think eyepro stops bullets?
You're just making my point for me. Eyepro just isn't enough.

Think of me like the modern day Jeff Cooper: I'm just trying to get you guys to see that you're not taking safety seriously enough.

Yes, which is why I said
>bullets flying at you
And not
>spall flying back at you

Teach me your ways Safety Senpai

eyepro>kevlar/nylon fursuit>ballistic mask
This is the only safe setup.

If the plate is slanted heavily like this, it's fine. It's physics.

One thing that bothers me is that you cant use bulletproof eyepro with them

Soon, user.
youtube.com/watch?v=DduO1fNzV4w

Im in edmond, not top far out. Do most of my shooting at tricity gunclub because im a noland city faggot. Would love to have somewhere private to shoot.

Seems kinda thin...the plate we had was probably an about an inch or 3/4rths of an inch thick. I like that one a lot though. Is it only for pistols?

It's not all it's cracked up to be. You gotta worry about neighbors, personal range maintenance and if you have a good amount of land in the country, lawn care, cleanup, and pest control. Also, fucking ticks, man. That shit is fucking annoying. But you can get guinnea keets to eat them. There are a lot of bad things to go with the good. City life isn't TOO bad. I do prefer the country though even with all the extra work it entails

>he thinks we're autistic enough to scour the internet for a match on your eye
Wew lad. I don't even know if that's possible

You wouldn't have happened to attended Harding Charter Prep, would you? Or go to OSU-OKC?

I don't put my face or any stupid shit like that on Jow Forums. I want as little personal shit of mine on here as possible as a general rule. Not assuming anything, just a cautious person.

It's for rifles too, 3/8th inch thick. I've shot mine at 15 yards with 5.56 and it just left some divots. This video is .308 at 50 yards.

youtube.com/watch?v=lh2nghJMWNA

Damn, I like these a lot

Unless that plate is 6'4" tall, of course that manlett spall is going into the ground...

You got some discount codes? 308 is generally 300fps slower than 223 as well... Steel is expensive...

L M A O MY DUDE. IT'S JUST PHYSICS N'SHIT
I'm sure if the bullet hits a dent or pit, there is still a possibility of ricochet or blowback. It's just physics

I almost took a full, steel jacket to the face, and took a minor ricochet to my carrier once

Shit sucks bro. Glad you're okay. Safety first

I actually saw the jacket skip across the ground and stop within arms reach of my face cause i was shooting prone, ive also taken tree shrapnel multiple times fucking around with tannerite

Shit, sounds like we weren't being too safe. But goddamnn was it fun. Not fun enough to lose an eye or worse, but damn fun. Any pics Or stories?

Nah, im just an uneducated hick.
Will lawn care and groundskeep for free access to range.

It's very unlikely but theoretically possible. Increasingly more unlikely but still possible is your firearm just detonating in your hand. There is inherent risk when you mess with high energy things.

It's not just theoretically possible. It happens and is a real risk esp with any steel target shooting. Plenty of accounts and injuries from this are found online.

And the vast majority of those accounts are of retards shooting flat steel.

As opposed to shooting concave or convex steel? Most targets are angled but the danger is still present

This is true. Folks, please go buy a 3a mask if you're going to shoot steel. You think I'm fucking meming, but I'm goddamn not.

>shilling for big mask

Attached: hqdefault.jpg (480x360, 17K)

Attached: ballisticmasksalesman.jpg (306x165, 6K)

As opposed to placing the steel at an angle so the spall or bullet naturally deflects away. People neglect to do that all the time or sufficiently angle it and that's where we get those accounts from.

For example, this guy right here. The target is just flopped onto something and the angle is facing upwards.

youtube.com/watch?v=0ABGIJwiGBc

It doesn't fucking matter how unlikely it is if it DOES end up happening. You sound like one of those fags who talk about how unlikely shark attacks are and then go surfing and get their torso fucked by a shark. It doesn't matter how unlikely it is IF IT ENDS UP HAPPENING TO YOU. perhaps you don't understand what probability means in practice.

I've been hit with spall in the face from a guy next to me shooting steel with a shotgun using slugs. Didn't penetrate but I was glad I was wearing glasses.

I guess don't drive a car then either? Listen fag, millions of people shoot steel for a lifetime and never have a problem. Is hickok45 dead from ricochet?

If the bullet hits the stand, gets deflected in a wrong way, or hits a distorted or damaged part of ANY steel target regardless of how it's angled such as a dent or pit from previous wear and tear, you can get injured or property can be damaged. It only takes once.

Drive safely, buckle up, wear a ballistic mask.

mask shekelers pls go

i'm just trying to help you out, goyim.

No, but he uses proper grade, has talked about the danger (don't ask for vid there are too many to sift through to find it) and uses proper distance and appropriate rounds for the grade of steel. He is also an awesome shot. Also, cherry picking. Just because it might not have happened to him doesn't mean it won't happen to others(which is does). Even if the probability of it happening is low, the probability no longer happens IF IT HAPPENS TO YOU. Steel targets it's marketed on safety and the risk is well documented. Also, not really smart to bring up cars considering people die in and are badly injured every single day in crashes despite the low probability of fatal crashes.

>he uses proper grade, uses proper distance and appropriate rounds for the grade of steel
Yes. He uses it properly. This is what I'm saying.

>Also, cherry picking
No, he has tens of thousands of rounds fired on camera, he's a perfect example.

> Also, not really smart to bring up cars
You're missing the point, the idea is we accept risk in a variety of ways. Usually it's managed to a minimum.

He literally talks about this in his vid "Shooting Steel Safely" where he goes over questions about steel targets and the dangers of them. I recommend you look it up, it's a good vid

Oooo, now I want a full suit of transparent aluminum armor.
Protection without propriety.

ITT
>noguns bitch and complain about steel being unsafe
>hasguns try to explain how you into steel
>oklahomos just want a decent range
>its a dumpster fire
I just wanted a dynamic range to do drills and set up multigun events with likeminded locals. I would have done all the work, organized all the events, RO'd at all the meets. But no, sperglord noguns had to shit up the thread dropping shit from their bruised, puckered anuses.

And all because they're too cool to wear a ballistic mask like the rest of us regular human beings

Sign me up

>shooting 5.56
>at steel
>from 15 yards

Bait, or you deserved what you got. Steel is mostly for pistol calibers, not rifles, and definitely not a nearly-3kfps 55 grain 223 bullet. Also why are you engaging with an AR from 15 yards? Step back to 50 meters, minimum.

Attached: wojakareyoutrynatrickme.png (323x325, 10K)

I wasn't firing it, I was just standing to the side loading mags. They were shooting .22lr but someone had an AR-15 chambered in .223

Steel for rifles is fine
Steel for rifles at 15 yards is retarded

Minimum safe distance? I would think the round would be what is important, not whether it's a rifle or pistol, right? O dont think a .22 rifle is gonna be any worse than a pistol chambered the same

Shit, there are three of us on here?

Attached: serveimage (4).jpg (1500x1000, 314K)

Oh shit, whattup

Barrel length is massively important for velocity.

uh bro 5.56 is fucking fast. fast enough to penetrate AR500 if it's coming out of a long enough barrel.

Thanks senpai still learning about this shit. Gun owner, but only just now getting an interest in really learning about them

(me)
(op)

Three or four by my count. This should be one (you) per oklahomo. Can we finally compete with the DUDEWEED larpers?

The round is important but virtually any center-fire rifle cartridge is a mistake at 15 yds on steel

my major piece of advice is buy a ballistic mask, every serious shooter owns a few. you need to be able to give one to people you take shooting so you need extras

T. Airshitter

Got a discount code?

Maybe we can get together and throw rocks at Mary Fallin for not signing constitutional carry.

>15 yards away

Holy fuck that is retarded. We only have 25 yard minimum for rifle at our range.

You fucking what, mate?
>securityprousa.com/international-armor-nij-level-iiia-ballistic-face-mask
You think this is for fucking airshit?

I'm actually okay with her shooting it down desu. People need to take the proper classes, register their carry weapon, and have a license. It's probably for the best

>barrier to defending yourself
>register weapons
Kill yourself, famalamadingdong.
