Thinking about buying a shotgun soon. What are some good/affordable shotguns to purchase?
Shotgun purchase
what do you want to use it for? birds? home defense? 3 gun?
There's a gorillion different kinds of scatterbois. plus you didn't even post a budget
with this in mind your only option is to get a midas grade browning superposed.
For home defense. Looking for something that is $500 or less.
590a1
Not OP but how much is a fair price for a police trade-in 18" 870 wingmaster that isn't beat to shit?
Used PTI Remmy goes for 200
Used mossy 500 goes for roughly 200
Either of those and you're good
>end thread
590a1 as well. or any mossberg 500 with a 20-ish inch barrel.
There's better options for home defense my dude
Get a Benelli SuperNova. 3 1/2 inch #00 buck will defend your home VERY efficiently. I just got one from my lgs for like 479 after tax. Plus its a fucking Benelli...
How much do 590a1s run at local shops? I haven't gone shopping in a while.
What does it have over a 500 or 590 other than snowflake points and 3.5" shells?
>home defense
Experts say a semi-automatic rifle is a far better option for that than a shotgun is.
Accuracy beats spread, especially if you're firing a longer distance down a hallway or something, and if you have family that the invaders are holding hostage, you don't want that spread to wound them or worse. If you wind up with one of your arms disabled or otherwise occupied, a shotgun's pump action is going to be too much trouble to use effectively. Skip the shotgun and get yourself an AR-15.
Maverick 88 or bust my dude
Quality level
He might not be fucking poor though....
Like fucking clockwork
Not op - Are Stoeger coach guns shit? Looking at getting a coach fun, no idea what to look for
18.5” barrel or 20” barrel for a 590A1?
18.5, not really any reason to get 20, shotguns don't really benefit like rifles do in terms of barrel length>projectile velocity. Unless the place you live mandates some shit length laws.
They're a little rough out of the box. They have a lot of tool marks and hard edged at corners. 30 minutes with a stone and they're great guns.
18.5" models cost more and are harder to find on sale. They hold 6 shells in the tube instead of 8 on the 20". You can get an extension, but they cost a good $100 or more. However, the 18.5" models can take different barrels, so you can get a 28" for trap. The 20" tube isn't compatible.
That said, I love my 20" and having handled both, the difference in barrel is negligle. Mine is for HD and a range toy, so the swappable barrels wasn't worth it to me. Plus, the lower cost was nice.
(Also, is there a reason why the minimum barrel length for a shotgun is 18" as opposed to 16" for other long guns?)
Mossberg 500 if you like tang safety. Remington if you like trigger safety.
but before you buy a shotgun(any gun for that matter) make sure you familiarize yourself with it -do your research. Bought a new Ithaca a while back and found out I needed some super hard to find star tip to disassemble the damn thing.
>super hard to find star tip
Torx bits, a set is 5 bucks at autozone.
Nah, I went to all the hardware stores in my area ...nobody had a star tip that small in a set or otherwise.
I was confused as fuck over the Mossberg options, so here's a quick rundown for anyone who cares. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on anything.
Maverick 88
>Cheapest option, but still a solid performer
>Made in Mexico (but not Taurus levels of shit)
>Can't swap out nor upgrade as many parts
>Safety is button style near the trigger guard
>18.5" holds 5 rounds in the tube, 20" holds 7
Mossberg 500
>Made in the US, better quality parts overall
>Can swap out barrels, handguards, internal parts, etc.
>Ambi safety on the top of the receiver
>Sling mounts
>Same capacity as the Maverick
Mossberg 590
>Has all the features of the 500 plus:
>Magazine tube is different, so 18.5" holds 6 and 20" holds 8
>Receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope
>Bayonet lug (some people look at this as a negative since it can dig into when carried on a sling)
Mossberg 590A1
>Has all the features of the 590 plus:
>Heavy barrel made of thicker metal (some see this as a negative due to the added weight)
>Trigger guard, trigger assembly and safety are all metal (above models are polymer)
Chrome lined barrel.
Buy one online. This is age of the internet old man, you can buy anything.
How pointless would a 3X scope be on a 590?
homedepot.com
Torx are standarized sizes. This has the smallest bit sizes available.
REEEEEeeeeeee
Mossberg 500 is good all around.
Mossberg 590 is a great choice for you, then.
If you want the heavy barrel and a bayonet lug, then the 590A1 is good too.
>sexy
Those “experts” being a bunch of Jow Forums NEETS who just scraped together enough cash for a bargain bin AR.
pro-tip: you can always just file the shallow sides of a flat head screw driver to match the angle of the grooves in a torx screw in a pinch.
just make sure to rotate the position of the bit to the next groove in the head of the screw during the initial few twists to avoid stripping it.
>t. fucking around with obscure proprietary metric torx screws in old electronix more than I could care to.
Depends. If you don't care about a factory extended mag tube, they are usually around $400 for a VERY good condition. I'm talking 1-2 specs of rust and that is it. Now, if you can live with more cosmetic damage, you'll find them cheaper. The problem is so many people want a good 870 and they know the old ones are the only good ones besides a $600+ and slightly harder to find new 870Police that isn't $1000 because of SureFire shit attached.
Other option, which is probably more difficult, but doable, is to find a used WingMaster or Police from a seller that isn't an FFL/pawn shop.
You are correct as far as possibility of short stroking pump under stress, but as for the "spreads gonna kill the whole family" thing you are dead wrong, even at the furthest distance that you would be shooting in a house, buck won't spread more than the size of a dinner plate and if you are making a kill-the-hostage-taker shot from 20 feet with a 12 gauge, you got bigger problems anyway
is right. 590A1 bbl length depends on 2 things
1. Want ability to switch bbls? 18"
2. Want higher cap mag and bayonet? 20"
why do people look down on shotguns for self defense???
>firing an ar with one hand
top home defense strats
Mossberg is the only choice. The ONLY choice.
>I'm on a budget
Mossberg 500 of a variety suitable to your use.
>I want the best tactical shotgun I can get!
Mossberg 590a1
I do care about the factory extended mag tube. Are they easy or decently priced to install onto a wingmaster?
