It really depends on the prosthetic. Some people with them can genuinely keep pace with non cripples and even sprint. He can probably move as fast as he needs to for a time. However, we’ve yet to see a prosthetic user ruck, travel long distances or general combat shit, no telling how the leg would hold up under that activity.
He’s good for short term combat maneuvers.
I also forgot to take into account flexibility. Can he crouch/prone quickly in that? Does it inhibit any movement? I can see this being different based on the leg, so again, it’s conditional
I have seen a prosthetic user ruck. He had to readjust about 3 times, which you can argue is a problem, but the fucker was doing 14 minute miles.
What do you mean by readjustment? A quick wobble isn’t a big deal but if the man has to sit down and tweak that shit than
Former VA worker. Hello. I had hands on a Prosthetic project, attempting to get the VA to adopt local "fabrication" facilities instead of farming out the shit. With additive manufacturing and the maker community, there was some real promise out there. Bureaucracy came in and shit it all up.
Well, bitching aside, your average limb lasts...oh...6 months to 2 years depending on how hard you beat it up. Our bones and joints really are amazing. With that said, dude in picture probably does a lot of driving. The leg in question looks like one of the models that has an electrically controlled stride, so its limited by range, and afghan moondust will rape it eventually.
As far as modern combat goes, he is pretty good to go. Wouldn't want to ruck across a mountain, but then, he can't. Flatland? mild hills like pic related? G2G. Plus the shooter/ small team skills are too valuable to quickly ditch.
also having been in afghanistan myself, the locals are very weirded out by Americans with fake limbs who want to keep fighting. The city dwellers, the older guys, they get it well enough, but the goat fuckers, they strongly believe we are fighting for the forces of evil, and an army that worships death. It's not something to be proud of. We are fighting children who just got to adulthood, and are so fucking backwards they are almost as dumb as africans. Its tragic as shit.
wouldn't he be better off with one of those hockeystick prosthetics
>but real talk
Well to be perfectly honest with you, you can take your nig nog nonsense with you right the fuck back to r*ddit =)
He had to sit down and redoit, stand back up, and get to it. He was still doing 14 minutes. Guy has my infinite respect.
I can't imagine that he'll be doing a lot of super high speed shit.
He's probably better suited for short range patrols and training other dudes to do high speed shit.
If you ask me, I’d prefer our enemies truly have skin in the game. If they don’t actually think we’re evil and were only fighting from fear than killing them is all the more tragic.
Moral faggotry aside, is it possible for injured soldiers to stay in their positions in the military after getting their limbs blown off? I imagine it’s more common for soldiers with lots of training since they can still serve advisory purposes, but I’m curious, how often does that happen? Is DA off limits for them? Robo ops sounds pretty fucking rad
he's got an AR so he's pretty useless
Yeah that guy’s got the gut for sure. Respect. You know his story?
Didnt they ban blade runner legs from sporting events for being too good? Operators should have their real legs removed and use those. The African ambush dudes woulda made it.
So what you're saying is that this guy is not combat effective in any kind of real war. Without constant maintenance and access to FedEx and industrial civilization his peg leg will fail.
Yeah giant springs are too good for running in a straight line. Big surprise
They banned on suspicion it might be too good, but that guy couldn't actually keep up with real legged athletes
>Plus the shooter/ small team skills are too valuable to quickly ditch.
I always wondered about that, just how valuable ARE the minds behind the trigger?
Also, while the tank you for your servix shit is retarded, good on you for actually giving a fuck at the VA, someone has to try.
>above the knee amputation/prosthetic
This man is NOT going on missions. If anything he's an FOBBIT sentry poser fag, with Hepatitis C
Not to be a dick, it's a badass picture and all but isn't hanging on to your cool guy job after missing a limb just to prove you can a liability to your team?
If you must keep serving, why not become an instructor, a support POG or something and let some young stud get the gig?
Sure but it was a different time, they were getting desperate for anyone capable of flying their planes.
After watching that video of the guy with one leg out perform all the women at climbing, I'd pick the guy with the one leg over all women.
The fact that he was one of the highest scoring aces of WWII kind of ruins your "he was just a desperation hire" theory
>your "he was just a desperation hire" theory
You found one outlier, who is making theories?
He was an experienced and skilled airman, not "anyone"
That guy came last place by the way.
It all comes down to experience. Would you rather have a raid completed by a fresh idiot straight out of AIT or someone who has done it for years? Pretty obvious IMO
> Good for you
Shouldn't he be admin or recruiter?
>Prosthetic project, attempting to get the VA to adopt local "fabrication" facilities instead of farming out the shit. With additive manufacturing and the maker community, there was some real promise out there.
Can you talk more about this? I've always wondered why this wasn't done to lessen the cost of custom fitting/manufacturing, but I don't know enough about it to know whats feasible.
I love the fact that even when in a POW in Colditz the Germans there had ridiculous respect for him. Though due to his continued escape attempts they had to take his tin legs away. Yet he still made attempts.
>encounters a rock
>begins uncontrollable backflips
I hardly find amputee vets "inspirational." I don't know about you, but they're a dime a dozens around here. Easily make up 75% of the homeless population.
Serve Uncle Sam, boys.
>(((Uncle Sam)))
> oy vey!
He's got a very valuable skill set, he does not need to charge an MG nest when he has a radio that sends a signal to CAP at the speed of light
could he have kept going in an emergency, or did he
have no choice but to stop and adjust?
>but the goat fuckers, they strongly believe we are fighting for the forces of evil, and an army that worships death
Can you blame 'em really?
This thread makes me want to operate so bad it hurts
Yeah man why can't they just let us bomb them and be cool with it? Bunch of backwards goat fuckers. Don't they know we're the good guys?
>Get shot for a country's economic interests
>Be dumb enough to risk getting shot again
>INSPIRATIONAL
In 2011, a guy with 2 prosthetic legs placed 4th in the annual Baton Death March Memorial Ruck out at White Sands Missle Range. It's a long ass march and some really rough ass terrain, so I'd say depending on the user they can be pretty fucking awesome.
Prosthetic manufacturing is a specialized process and is bottlenecked at the fitting stage. Setting aside the cost and logistic issues of using multiple smaller manufacturers rather than one or two large manufacturers, the "maker community" is a bunch of amateurs and hobbyists. From a personal perspective, would you rather get a prosthetic made by a company that specializes in them or would you rather get a prosthetic assembled from parts sourced from multiple vendors who may not otherwise have anything to do with medical equipment?
It’s a publicity photo. It’s not real.
You can’t even enlist with flat feet let alone keep operating with a fucking peg leg
That picture is fabricated to make the photographer a assload of money
Lose a leg, lose sanity, get PTSD... be forever reminded that you fought wars for other countries in some middle eastern sandbox.
>You can’t even enlist with flat feet let alone keep operating with a fucking peg leg
"let's just throw out the guy with 6+ years of proper operator door kicking experience because he lost a leg"
there was an F-15E pilot who ejected at something like 700 knots, so supersonic, both of his arms were broken, his elbows were bent backwards, one of his legs was only attached by veins, what was left of the muscle and the skin, the other guy in the jet died
the air force let him fly once he recovered
>let's just throw out the guy with 6+ years of proper operator door kicking experience because he lost a leg
yes because those guys a dime a dozen whereas pilots are constrained by a small training pipeline
No legs meant less space in the extremities for blood to flow when turning, which meant he could pull off higher G turns than most other pilots.
Fuck off with that
>mad at the facts
I've known some worthless pilots, sorry. Plus women can do that job.
>Losing limbs for ZOG by mindless fitness meathead who does not understand nuances of Israeli control of foreign policy
Yeah, no.
Can't have drop in blood pressure if blood has nowhere to drop
>The mobile infantry made me the man i am today
Prosthetic limbs are good psyops. Americans be cyborg killers and shiet, Ahmed.
>women pilots are more valuable than dime-a-dozen cannon fodder
aw shit
Really?
Probably still 100x better than you.
>cannon fodder
Regular line soldiers aren’t gonna get their leg blown off and come back for more, if they had that much commitment they’d just go to an actual unit that gets shit done.
The guy in OPs post is probably some high speed guy, or at least more high speed than actual cannon fodder.
Real shit in the book they plop his torn up ass at the front desk so that people who sign up get a bit a a wake up call that this could happen to you.
>high speed speshul farces can't be cannon fodder
there's a reason frat boy douchebags are filling SEAL ranks, casualties have thinned their ranks significantly
I like when he sees the recruiter later, with his shiny prosthetics on, and they had him sitting there at the desk looking broken as fuck to make people think it through. The movie adaptation is an abomination.
>cannon fodder is any DA element that takes casualties
>SEALs are cannon fodder
Stay retarded.
cannon fodder is anyone for whom casualties is considered acceptable by the politicians who give them orders
i.e. the entire military
The truly loyal are always needed.
Yeah, check the cop in the video below @ 59 seconds. He could work his prosthetic no problem.
Y'all seen that COPS clip where the officer with a prosthetic leg catches a guy in a foot pursuit? Shit was pretty sweet.
Mayne I let chu catch me
This thread is why we can never have a normal society.
Idiots look at a pic of a guy who sold his body to obama, rightly got punished trying to murder some sob far away with our money, goes back to doing it, and idiots get a hard on for it.
>"let's just throw out the guy with 6+ years of proper operator door kicking experience because he lost a leg"
If your experience has led you to losing a leg...
>6 years of getting shot at
>gets shot once
>thousands upon thousands of rounds sent his way
>only finds .025% of them with his leg
meanwhile, chapped ass user regularly doesnt wipe his ass well enough to keep from being butthurt.
The fitting process is the bottleneck but its also the excuse being used to drag up prosthetic prices unnecessarily. Assuming the prosthesis' attachment point and proportions (inc gait) are maintained to proper standards, the rest could be done by any manufacturer and even amateurs and hobbyists. But you still pay out the nose for the rest of the hardware, even when they're largely generic parts because they can get away with it.
digits
>be American
>join the US Army and become a ZOGbot because that's all your 56% country stands for and that's all you're good for
>lose leg (small price to pay for the glory of Greater Israel)
>receive a prosthetic leg
>return to the sandbox because you're good for nothing but being cannon fodder
>take pics of yourself in the sandbox, showing off your prosthetic leg because you wanna show everyone how tough n hardcore you are
>continue fighting for Greater Israel
Jokes on him desu.
This guy gets it.
Until we develop GitS tier tech these unfortunate cripples should have the same roll they had for literally all of history
>roll
Role, not roll.
>Has the whole plot figured out
>Totally got those kikes exposed
>Only it doesn't matter because you are a shut in NEET with nothing to show for your life
Yeah yeah JOOOOOOSSSS what ever.
>SOON
he probably has built a relationship with the locals and they want him doing the negotiating with them.
Dunno, that scene is still in the movie
If pic related is the guy I'm thinking of he was army special forces. He really, really didn't want to separate so they through him through a monster battery of physical tests including ranger school or some shit. He passed with flying colors but upon thorough personal reflection he realized that if the leg ever went down he'd be putting his entire team at risk so he decided not to re enter the sandbox and instead took either a training job or he separated.
me responding to me, to respond to all of you.
most guys I know were wisked away back stateside, by the time you get your shit fixed and get your "fake" as some guys will call it, you are already out of shape, and out of training. Unless you are early into your next enlistment and willing to fight or have a valuable skillset, it is fucking over. For now. DeusEx was onto something when it talked about a solider "re-up" program, but prosthetics are too juvenile right now.
Without logistics his leg would fail after he ran out of ammo, most major failures can and often are locally adressed until a more permanent solution is available. I have seen juryrigged shit that made my head spin. Electric actuators drilled out, replaced with a solid rod, and some leaf springs. The predictive movement was lost because, well, no computer, but the ankle was able to flex and movement was available once more. Never underestimate a veteran with spare time and nothing else to do.
The minds are exactly as valuable as there are replacements. If its an in-demand field, you'd be surprised. Stop Loss is a fascinating subject. And thanks for the VA shit, it ground me down and i am out now. but I tried. Did a lot of high level documentation and catagorizing, to include 1890 some worldwide facilities, and their metadata.
It was fucking politics. "We are worried about the repercussions to our commercial partners" meaning fuckers at the top get a slice of the pie. I'll tell you what I told my leadership. "fuck them, we are not an economy simulator."
no.
they are backwards, and our leadership of the obama and bush era had dubious motivation. They are unaware of the differentiation between good and bad, beyond what does and does not benefit them or their tribe. nothing else matters past that. They will murder a child, or give false intel to generate an airstrike on another village out of spite, boredom, or grudge.
My plan as laid out was to distribute 3d handscanners and a short tutorial video accessible over the intranet. Anyone could be trained up, and credentials could be used to validate self registry as training. Scanning what was left of the stump would allow for a good socket fit the first time instead of the usual "make, fit, send back, adjust, fit, etc." real world data does not back up that the major manufacturers are shit hot like you think. And a commercial vs "maker" unit both get beaten to shit, but we should allow the veteran the choice of what they get, and how quick they get it.
Once scanned we could have made, and fabricated via extrusion and SLS, coupled with available micro controllers. We are talking same week fitting. We are talking about an inventory of semi custom equipment, ready to go inside of a day, all for less than the cost of one commercial limb.
Even with a lifespan of 80% that of the commercial, at about 85% usability compared to it in terms of actual task accomplishment in dexterity, the cost was less than 10%. that includes man hours.
The project was killed, because it threatened major VA phrosthetics projects for build out of huge traditional facilities for in house fabrication already "underway" in terms of contracting had drafted a plan, and money was somewhat allocated. Yet by the time I left, 4 years after the fact, they still had not done shit, or even broken ground.
The big takeaway from my rant would be this; the VHA is a diseased limb of the VA. Trump signing the veteran's preference act allows everyone to move away from it and seek care from universities who want to research the problems unique to the community, or a civilian setting where the doctors are liable for their actions and thus a bit more cautious.
also: other shit that was canned, but in talks in 2014. keep that in mind: 2014.
-Phage therapy (nearly fucking free. deals with major infections that are a huge problem)
-Ultrasonic imaging to replace or augment X-rays, thus reducing ionizing energy exposure.
-Trying to partner (joint fund) with universities for experimentals, at the veteran's own liability and understanding, with the agreement of datashare, for items like Genetic therapy, stem cell research, etc. our "ethics" committee decided that people who were desperate to survive could not make a decision on something that would risk their life, despite ya know, already fucking being fated for death.
Fun stories: Talking about veterans medication mishaps at Portland during a major meeting, and a fuckhead doctor decides to show us cartoons and talk about how smart he is and his mismatched socks for about 3 hours. MDs should be prohibited from holding any fucking position of authority. You don't make a pilot with no training a CEO, dont fucking make a doctor a facility manager. They fail time and time again.
I'm out.
No he got it
>they strongly believe we are fighting for the forces of evil, and an army that worships death. It's not something to be proud of.
Implying I give a fuck what these savages believe and will let it impact what I take pride in
>I had hands on a Prosthetic project
Well duh, I mean, wouldn't that be 50% of your workload?
The african ambush dudes were unfathomably retarded and had it coming
This is why you will eventually lose, as usual.
I can tell you’re a pathetic, ineffectual man who maintains his ego by ripping on others accomplishments
What DA element doesn’t take casualties you fucking mouthbreather. That’s part of the job, you don’t have any combat unit so elite that they’re immortal. Go learn words faggot
>Hurr Durr without a supply chain the soldier will fail
No shit sherlock
They rape little kids user. My dad kicked a door in in Afghanistan only to find a 12 year old getting gangbanged. They blow up little girls fetching water from wells. They publicly behead tribe leaders standing up to terrorists. Not all are like this but the ones that are are fucking backwards.
Don't laugh, I read once that afghans thought the ballistic glasses our soldiers wore allowed them to see through clothing.
Fuck off Carlos
12 year old boy or girl?
boy, probably
