From what I gather this comes down to primarily a failure to communicate within the SF team as well as adjoining Nigerian forces, leading to an inability to coordinate and execute a proper counter attack (although it should have been a retreat knowing the size of the enemy force in retrospect). These factors were the crux of the failure, but they might have fared better if other factors weren't in play such as of shoty planning and unfocused execution of the original mission they were on, leader making things worse on multiple occasions, and not having a cohesive partnership with the Nigerian forces to begin with. There were lots of other factors that can be brought up but these are the main mistakes I hope will be learned from; these men paid a hefty price for that lesson, RIP

Honestly I think that decision was a reflex stemming from the search and destroy nature of the op; it seems they gave up on making contact before and once it found them they readily settled in for a fight, although it should have been abundantly clear that they were likely facing an organized and potentially large enemy force given how long they loitered in the area without previous contact up until the ambush. The decision to stop in their tracks to hop out and fight suggests they assumed they were dealing with a small hit and run contingency that would soon fall back. In hindsight, it's easy to say they should have just kept driving, but if you were one of these SF guys doing that job, would you have immediately fled when the elusive enemy finally took a swing at you? Unfortunately, the leadership/coordination shortcomings that were made prior and subsequently to the attack exacerbated the primary mistake of underestimating the enemy; they might have overcome this mistake if they weren't already plagued hampered by lack of sound leadership and inability to coordinate within their team and with the Nigerians
US forces retreated several times and had to abandon nearly all of their vehicles because they become disabled. While it's not stated it looks like ISIS killed more US troops and Nigerian forces than the other way around, and the soldiers that did die, died unheroically (notably, Sgt Johnson who had to run from US vehicle 3 about 1000 meters after getting left behind by the main force only to then have to leave behind two of the Nigerian forces as he ran, only to then be gun down by a technical and small arms fire where he was taking cover behind a bush). Not to mention looks like a fourth of the Nigerian force fucking ran away at the start of the ambush. Like I said, looks like a total shit and if it's propaganda then it makes what happen look like incompetence and unheroic deaths for everyone involved.

Unless you consider the whole ambush propaganda, then I don't really see your train of thought. Shit happens, and the whole point of an ambush is it's pretty easy to sweep over enemy forces when they're unsuspecting. Even small numbers can take out much larger teams if it's coordinated properly.

The fact that they had to fucking dismount at the start of an ambush and don plate carrier proves the entire fucking operation was wholly incompetent from beginning to end.
That PB-NSCV seems to be a response to this very ambush situation and ineffective NSCVs, the tender was issued march this year and publicized the week that kill video dropped.
So if I understand it correctly a new vehicle built from the ground up with better; cargo/ammo load, protection, turret that can be lowered internally, suspension and atv-capabilities, +Chinook internal fit and a kit-over to look like a Toyo or Ford. That would have allowed them to both better scoot and shoot whilst staying in the vehicle or at least have heavier arms at the ready.

That maneuver can be annoying af to do in civvies, it could be really fucking hard wearing battle rattle.
