Short Recoil: the barrel and bolt/slide move a short distance (a few millimeters) while still locked together allowing pressure in the chamber to drop before the action unlocked and the case is extracted.
Long Recoil: the barrel and bolt move the full length of the action locked together, at which point they unlock, the barrel returns to its original position and then the bolt moves forward feeding in a new round

The barrel and slide move rearward together for their full length of travel. At the most rearward point, the barrel begins to move forward while the slide stays behind. As the barrel moves forward, the fired cartridge is extracted and ejected and once that happens the slide follows and strips a new cartridge from the magazine.
>Short
The barrel and slide move rearward a short distance, where the barrel stops moving, and the slide continues to move rearward while extracting and ejecting the fired cartridge before returning forward to strip a new round from the magazine.
