Outside of hunting/sporting, it's clear shotguns are obsolete as far as protection goes. Many law enforcement agencies, particularly in large cities, are either moving away from shotguns in favor of ARs, or have ARs added to both their squad cars and SWAT teams. While I understand the use of a shotgun for breaching, everything that comes after is going to be at the hands of some form of intermediate caliber rifle. I understand poor farmers and such will continue to trust shotguns to defend themselves against wild animals, hunt, etc. But if you live in the city or can afford an AR, there is literally no reason for you not to have one in place of a shotgun, not for protecting your life.

Less risk of overpenetration, quicker follow up shots, quicker reaction times, more applicable in an urban environment since they're generally more compact and easier to use in cqc unless you count class 3 weapons, more ammo for more follow up shots if necessary, less hearing damage per shot fired, etc. etc.

when concealability is not a concern, a shotgun with 00buck is objectively superior to a pistol at stopping a person.

Unless you're shooting target rounds, 556 typically transfers significantly more energy upon impact with drywall or flesh than buckshot or hollowpoint slugs (grain of salt, there's a vast variety out there) typically would.

I'm not arguing against pistols, I think a handgun is necessary to own, even before an AR, since you can protect yourself at home and when you aren't at home.

However, an AR is far superior in every way for defending yourself.

Imo a pcc/sug gun is the best weapon for home defense in the city, in the country an ar is fine.
A semi auto rifle is probably superior to a shotgun in most situations, but a sjotgun will put someone down more reliably on the first shot, and in an average size house its hard to miss even with a shockwave. Shotguns have their place as a defensive tool, but they shine in breaching and in sport. It comes down to what you train with and what you shoot well. If you are a surgeon with a shotty why not use it, ill take a sub gun tho
