Right, thought about that point a bit more after I posted. The reason they probably went with a pod design rather than fucking with the internals is because it is easier and doesn't fuck with the aircraft's balance as much. They probably decided to go with a larger, bolt-on pod system that fits the already existing hardpoints, rather than an integral system that would require modifying the airframe itself. Do we know the stats on both of them? If not we can't really do a proper comparison other than "ones bigger".

Only the F-4B had the IRST. The C and D had the chin pod for commonality of parts at first, then it was deleted, then it was reinstalled for the AN/ALR-25/26. The AN/AAA-4 wasn't very useful.

Dogfights don't happen anymore. You detect the aircraft 350km+ out, fire an AA missile at 50-180km and fuck off. A human piloted jet can pull a max of 9-10 G's, an AIM-120 missile can pull 35G's. There's no reason to dogfight in this day and age.
