The nice thing about non-lethal options is that they're non-lethal to unskilled, undisciplined users as well. She's not going to pepper spray or taser herself or your next-door neighbor to death.

There are some people you just can't trust with a gun, and a whole lot of wives and girlfriends fall in this category. Women don't have much instinct for lethal violence. Instinctively, they don't expect to either be able to kill or to have people want to kill them. This makes them handle weapons irresponsibly, respond to aggression with submission, and sometimes commit violent acts out of an odd sense of unreality (I knew one teenage girl who kicked a boy she liked hard in the knee with a hard-soled shoe on, dislocating his kneecap, and she didn't mean to cause any injury, she just thought it was a funny gesture).

Of course, some people can overcome their instincts, especially with training, but not everyone can and there's not always time for training. Most women who shouldn't have guns don't want guns, and shouldn't be pushed to carry guns.

Same goes for stun guns, which are arguably even worse because the counterplay to them is having more strength and dexterity than a woman, which is not hard. Pepper spray doesn't incapacitate physically, so if the attacker has high pain tolerance or is really pissed you're fucked. The only nonlethal even worth considering is beanbags but good luck concealing a shotgun. Just get a damn gun and maybe have a talk with her about the philosophy of self-defense or something.

Pepper spray also causes blindness, not just pain, but it's really just to fuck someone up so they're easier to fight. In general that's probably what people misunderstand about non-lethals. It's not set phasers to stun or something. They're tools to assist a trained person in a fight.
