Here's the thing though, those laws spread to gun-control states. Gun rights states generally tend to go the opposite direction. Whichever side a state leans in that regard, they're going further and further into that lean.

Agree but traditionally the midterms go to the party opposite the President. As soon as that were to happen this time the lying media will have 24/7 coverage of it about how America clearly disapproves of Trump and clearly wants more gun control. They'll get all the loud mouth Blues out there parroting it and most normal conservatives will just be quiet due to the 24/7 media telling them their horrible and already feeling a little defeated having just lost an election cycle.

Traditionally, the out-of-power party didn't have a non-existent platform and a globally-broadcast meltdown nipping at their heels around midterms either.
