Then they violate it a few times and spit in Chamberlaine's face, invade a couple countries, and start the war. Hitler "wanted war" because Germany was pushed into the shitpile but not buried in it, which let them get up, brush themselves off, and try to push everyone else into said shitpile. All because a piece of paper wasn't harsh enough to dissolve Germany or cripple it, but it wasn't easy enough to make the German people regretful. Instead it made then angry and riled them up, which led to the scenario you decided on.

The French and English pact was well known. Hitler invading Poland was an invitation for war, he knew they'd declare war on Germany if they attacked Poland. Their invasion despite this warning means yes, in fact, he did "want" war. If he didn't, they wouldn't have done it.

I fell for this, too. The reality is that Germany had to take all of Poland in order to mitigate the Polish military threat as they claimed ethnic German land. Once they did so, they were in a full scale war for which they were unprepared. They needed to take France in order to keep Britain from attacking across the English Channel and they needed to take North Africa to keep Britain from attacking Italy across the Mediterranean. Russia was staging a second front. When Germany preemptively attacked, they intercepted 24,000 boxcars of artillery shells headed Westward from Russia. Germany hoped until the end that she could negotiate a peace with Britain. Hitler always imagined the war to be containable and that he had only one true front - against Russia. In retrospect this seems foolish but KIM that just as HP long was assassinated in the US to insure that the new US President would not be amenable to peace in the coming war, that the King of England was forced from the throne in order to insure the same with Britain. There was a lot of pro-German sentiment in Britain at the time. Further, there was a long runup to the war and pretty much everyone saw it coming. It was not a surprise like I was taught. There were a lot of obvious pointers.

Fun fact: They quietly considered marching on Berlin in 1940,and came to the conclusion they'd never get there before the pro-Hitler Luftwaffe bombed them off the roads. Sauce on that is The German Generals Talk by B Liddell Hart.
