If you can find a Century CETME with cast receiver made in St. Albans you are golden. They are worth like 800-1000 if labeled correctly but usually mislabeled and sell for 500 range.
This is a Century St Alban CETME on a G3 receiver with real low B00 serial. Probably some of the first CETME they built and just used some left over cast G3 receivers instead of new cast CETME receivers.

The receiver will say Made in St Albans VT instead of Georgia VT. It will also say CETME or CAI3. CAI3 will usually be a G3 Clone. CETME will be CETME. But only way to tell for sure is take bolt carrier out. There was some overlap as they transitioned between G3 and CETME production on cast G3 receivers. As a result some real early CETMEs will have G3 sights instead of the CETME paddle wheel rear sight.
The CETMEs on the cast receivers were also made using the best grade kits since these were the first CETMEs built by Century before they started taking short cuts.
Look for old Century CETMEs and casually check receiver. The "Century is on the receiver, it is worth more as scrap metal" meme will work to your advantage. Most sellers have had too many buyers walk away because they saw Century on the receiver. Be ready to low ball.

Whichever for ergos. I have ptr and cetme but also a fal. FAL feels nicer for me on ergos and easier for me to shoot. I like the looks and brute force of the delayed roller blowbacks so I run with those. If I ever needed to grab a rifle and go, it will be my FAL just because it doesn’t beat me up as badly as the delayed rollers.
If FAL, look for Century on Imbel receiver instead of a DSA if you can read up on what to look for. Will run you about same price and better parts if built correctly.

Yes. You can't see the front sight post at all with the bayonet in place but for some reason the Germans never thought to change it. They just left it that way, blocking the sights, for nearly 60 years. Totally.
