Except it isn't really proven in every possible way. Traditional way of US Navy to design ships usually has been pretty conservative. The reasons Zumwalt-class failed are rather simple. They loaded up the design with lots of new unproven design features, usually there might be only one or two new concepts. Firstly Zumwalt is loaded with new materials, new unorthodox hull design, new weapons layout with peripheral VLS's, ground breaking railgun armament that was in first phases of design, new advanced gun system as interrim armament until railgun gets unfucked, fuck tons automation to shrink crew complement (risk to damage control capability of crew) and new propulsion/power systems. Even bigger issue is the fact that US Navy had fairly little idea about future missions of navy and the fact that their future ship concepts got cancelled once post cold war budget cuts became reality. Everything except Zumwalt and LCS got cancelled and both of those were mistakes on both engineering and doctrinal aspects of design. A lot of ship concepts they had in 90's were simply retarded like arsenal ship, but they also lost cruiser version of Zumwalt and proper future frigate. Instead of LCS they should have built a frigate, a minesweeper and a corvette class. Possibly with some shared systems, but LCS is abomination. A frigate sized corvette with design dominated by speed and range requirements that are retarded for most of missions those are supposed to fill.

They would be building more than three ships if it was good design. It failed to meet actual mission requirements of real world and that railgun didn't work out so well. They even cancelled rocket boosted long range guided ammunition for AGS.

When the DD-X first went on paper, it was supposed to be a next-gen Cold War surface combatant. Then the Cold War ended. Russia couldn't sustain the force level needed to justify more Zumwalts, and China is still playing catch-up.

So the program was canceled, the prototypes were retained as tech development platforms, and the lessons learned will go into new classes of ships, including a future surface combatant once China grows larger.

Zumwalt is post cold war project, designed without any clear mission or threat picture in mind. While initial design studies started in late 80's, most of the design work and re-defining design goals was made after mid 90's.
