I did google it for NY. I am assuming I could probably buy from a gun store in Vermont but it's really far away.

Montana is a long way from New York. I'm not sure legally where private transfers land with out of state residents, but I can say of the 8 guns I've bought since moving here, I didn't even exchange names with half of them.
