I play with the Call of Chernobyl mod with the Arsenal upgrade add-on, currently running around with a USP45 and a suppressed M4 with a red dot. I also have an ak103 with a grenade launcher and a VEPR-12 stashed away.

The 40mm alone is a fight stopper, and like I said, a mag of M855 will shred any armor in the game.

I always end up using an AK-12 or AEK in 7.62 with a reflex sight, suppressor, and grenade launcher. I usually don't even carry a backup because I'm meticulous about repairs. If you just keep the primary in good condition you don't need a secondary. Plus repair kits weigh a shit ton and guns degrade fast. So if you don't carry a repair kit you might end up with a broken main and then your reduced to a secondary that is barely effective and rapidly degrading.

The 7.62 is effective against both mutants and stalkers, whereas other guns I liked are usually only effective vs one type of enemy. Vepr's arent great against armored targets plus it's hard to carry like 500rnds. Anything in 5.45 or 5.56 takes way too many rounds to bring muties down. Sniper rifles have a severely compounded ammo problem, and the low ROF and bulk make them hard to effectively use against mutants in close quarters. SMG's are awesome in cqb vs stalkers, but burn thru ammo quick, are inaccurate, and degrade fast because of, well, burning ammo quick. 308 guns like the FAL or G3 are also good, but are a little overkill vs the lowered amount of ammo you can carry and aren't super effective on full-giggle.

The only real contender for a replacement for a modernized AK in 7.62 with all it's attachments is IMO the AS-VAL. It's quiet as a mouse, equally awesome both for suppressing fire and aimed shots. It's great at even long range in relatively skilled hands and a monster in cqb. And the ammo is quite light so you can pack a shitton and packs a huge fucking punch. It devastates both mutants and armored targets. IMO what really holds it back is that compared to the AEK or AK-12 it doesnt have the GL. Now you can just carry a hogs leg and some nades, which is an option. But it's quite a bit more weight (3 vs 6lbs).

Personally, as I tend to go on very long treks thru the zone without support or friendly contact the extra 3lbs in food, water, supplies, and ammo makes a huge difference.
