Favorite WW2 birds

Can we have a thread for our favorite warbirds of the Second World War? Post your pick, and why it makes you feel that way about it, whether it’s armament, performance, or just beautiful to you.

Something in the greenhouse-style cockpits of the Me-410 and the Ju-188 (pictured) enthralls me.
Perhaps it's the scenic visibility, perfect for enjoying the fact that you're fucking flying.

It makes me think of adventure.

Ju-88, it could be modified to perform just about any mission or role without significantly changing the air frame.

I like the He-111 for the same reason, sometimes I fly it out in /spoilers don’t work/war thunder/spoilers don’t work/ just to enjoy the view.
One of the few planes to have been to every continent, good choice, very comfy.

No contest whatsoever for me.

Being part of a PBY crew in the Pacific would've been Jow Forumsomfy as fuck.

I knew a old pilot that did this. He said he knew he killed 1 Japanese sub and maybe another but didn't confirm the kill because it was too far down

I could struggle to pick one and ramble on about multiple planes that I love for looks or for fucntion, but overall, I always end up going with the F6F Hellcat. These things are just beautiful, effective, rugged aircraft. Taking the already decent F4F and making everything better, a war-winning bird...err kitty.

I spent 7 years as a Director of Maintenance and crew chief on a DC 3. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
However, as cool as American stuff is, I'm more interested in the German ww2 stuff. Probably because there are hardly any examples flying today.

A great choice, Ju-88s really could do everything. Some show I was watching was showing off one of the more complete examples and going over the cockpit with the stuff like automated dive control. The Ju-87 also had that but I've never seen footage of it.
Those and the He-111 have such interesting appearances that it's hard to not want to fly in one.

I'm very sad there's no flying examples of any Junkers warplane except the Ju-52. At least those few old tri-motors are well maintained and appreciated by military and civil aviation enthusiasts.

I like that one american plane, the P50something

but otherwise I am a whereaboo

I recently learned that germany produced something like 100,000 aircraft in ww2

I would've figured maybe 10,000 at most

and something like 80,000 got shot down or crashed that's nuts you had to be fucking insane to fly in these deathtraps

You probably have to redo your homework on those numbers.

Oh, user.
The only permitted color for a PBY is white.
White as the tropical beaches over whch it soars.

Didn't some magnificent bastard buy a Catalina and use it like a flying yacht, cruising around?
Yes, someone did!

it's literally my dream to do this, I might have to build my own from scratch at this rate though

The Hurricane is literally the most gorgeous aircraft of WWII in my opinion.

I know it sucked, but damn she was beautiful...

Didn't the Russians field them fairly successfully, or am I making that up?

They did

I believe they used them successfully for ground attack, but it was designed to be an interceptor (With an engine that didn't work right at high altitudes :'(

Yes. The engine, or more precisely the single-stage, single-speed supercharger left much to be desired.
The P-39 performed poorly above 5,200 m.
In both western Europe and the Pacific the Airacobra found itself outclassed as an interceptor.
But ist was well built and the cockpit in front of the engine provided excelent view, well suited for ground attack.

Its a myth, also USA mostly provided them almost only with HE cannon ammo. They used it as a fighter, not ground attacker. Many of their Guards fighter regiments flew P-39, also Pokryshkin himself

4 of the top 6 Soviet Aces primarily scored their kills in the Kobrushka
It was used as an air superiority fighter to protect the Sturmoviks

So hard to find a picture of it that isn't a model kit.

Not the most elegant bird, but definitely fearsome looking.

I always liked the earlier models in Battle of Britain camo, but it is one of those odd planes that got prettier as it was upgraded. Griffon Spits and long nosed 190s just don’t do it for me like the early versions. I’ll make an exception for the Ta-152 however, it’s just so slender and long-legged looking. Like Taylor Swift in plane form.
MS a cute

The one in my pic is an unmade version that had propellers in the rear.

True except for the G6/14s bulges and the K4s crooked nose
