between the two M&P makes more sense for a first gun. Get the 2.0 for sure, it's a straight upgrade of the original.

I love 1911s but in general they don't make a great defense firearm without the underlying knowledge of how to properly troubleshoot and take care of them. Not to mention the price difference between an M&P and a comparably reliable 1911 could buy a pile of ammo. If you're a budget-less europoor then things might be different but the huge disparity in terms of practicality/value really leans things towards the M&P.

The 1911 felt slightly better to shoot but the guy at the range told me maintenance on an M&P is more beginner friendly, and it felt pretty good to shoot too. Wasn’t a fan of the Glock, but I am a complete newfag.

Is $450-$500 a reasonable price for a 2.0? Seems like the going rate online is slightly lower on average but I’d rather buy local for simplicity sake (I don’t live in a state with strict gun laws).

Maintenance on handguns is not hard, anyone that says it's difficult is either belittling you or is so ignorant of simple mechanics and geometry that they are projecting their inequities onto you.

As far as learning how to shoot, a heavy gun in a lighter energy load will be easier to shoot. Single action will be easier than double, striker fire is decent but won't be as crisp as single.

As far as learning and transitioning to self defense, this part is where a lot of opinions are going to differ. Me personally, I say if you have no prior shooting experience that you should get a .22lr pistol. Both the m&p and 1911 types will come in these. I say this because you will need to shoot a lot to develop skills and. 22lr is much cheaper than the cheapest 9mm or 45acp. It also recoils much less and will allow you to develop the basics without developing bad habits such as flinching/recoil anticipation/limp wrist. Don't let anyone (or your ego) tell you that a .22lr is a [insert emasculating verbiage here] gun. It is not for defense, it is for training.

Once you develop your skills, you will easily shoot other calibers since you will have developed proper form. Once you have that, you can pick your poison of caliber and brand. So start with a .22lr, either a full size 1911 with a conversion kit or (God help me for suggesting this) a smaller one like a Remington black label.
