/SWG/ Swiss Weapons General - Switzerland national day edition
I recently got back from Switzerland and saw one of these in person for the first time in a gun shop, how do they stack up against the AR and AK platforms?
This. Ive been thinking about saving up and getting one from JDI since I played to much STALKER when I was younger
From which canton are you from user? How is military service going?
Another swissbro here from BL
Currently slaving as a Wachtmeister
Have a happy national day, fellow swissbros!
haven't handled AKs or ARs enough for a comparison, but the 550 series is solid, has a crisp trigger out of the box and magnificent sights. The barrels are rather thick and durable, but there are issues with the dated design; namely:
Grip angle makes it uncomfortable to operate the safety with the gun pointed
Too heavy for an AR, centre of gravity a bit too far forward for my personal taste (born of the old idea of a static defense army using bipods in combat)
Wobbly bipod robs the gun of a lot of stability in the prone position
Mags are FUCKspensive
Also, SIG quality control and customer support suck ass ever since they left Switzi.
I really wish the bipod would be more like the one used for the lmg 05. I want to be able to put my wright into it without collapsing.

The manufacturing quality is amazing for a service rifle. It is precise (we use the 550 for competitions) solid (it s built like a tank and supposed to resist and outlive a conscript's life) and reliable : i crawled in the snow water and mud with it and it never failed me. The only way to kill it is to put shit directly in the internals or the barrel.
However you can have the same precision if you buy a 2500$ AR15. Not so sur about the solidity.
It can also eat any type of ammo : steel and brass cases. I have shot 55gr to 69gr ammo without any noticeable loss of precision.
Gas piston and reciprocating charging handle can be an advantage but make the rifle heavier.
The SG550 is very front heavy compared to an AR15 and its length can be an problem for CQB. The AR15 might have slightly better ergonomic. The 550 lacks modularity especially a native top rail for optics but you can easily add a top rail on it. The lighter and shorter versions like the 551 and 553 might be a better option.
If you want a semi-auto rifle in 5.56 for precision shooting (300m or more) and a (very) good quality alternative to an AR15 I recommande the SG550.
If you want to use it as a combat rifle (hd shtf or whatever) I would rather recommande you to go with the SG551 or the SG553lb (native picatiny rail and backup iron sights version instead of the diopter one) like in pic related.
Being less popular than the AR15 platform the SG55x is more expensive and it has less parts and accessories on the market. Mags are also more expensive. The cheapest ones go for 45CHF here when you can buy tapco and magpul AR15 mags for 20-25CHF. There is 5/10/20/30rds mags and 100rds drums for the SG55x. You can also add a little piece of polymer in the mag well that allows you to use AR15 mags without permanent modification.
I can't really compare the SG55x to the AKs since I'm not really used to it.
