No gun here. Won a 5$ bet today talking to a has gun firearms enthusiast about if .223 and 5.56 are the same, which they are not. Thanks.
No gun here. Won a 5$ bet today talking to a has gun firearms enthusiast about if .223 and 5.56 are the same...
A thread died for this.
in practicality they are the same though. Just different loadings in the same physical cartridge.
There isn't a modern firearm in existence that can't shoot both. prove me wrong.
>are they the same
No
>are they so similar you can use them in the same rifle(in 95% of the time)
Yes. There are some rifles that are ONLY .223 or 5.56 but most will interchange. The difference is very negligible. Same with .308/7.62 NATO
Nah, they're not the throat is different and if you use nato in a 223 chamber you might end up mit malfunctions because of the higher pressure.
RIP in peace boomer thread that died
Nice apu fren, here have this one.
Have one back, bro.
>if .223 and 5.56 are the same, which they are not.
556 has higher pressure.
>or 5.56
Is there literally any rifle that is 5.56 only? I'm pretty sure Evey 5.56 can shoot .223.
Pretty sure you can shoot both interchangebly.
The throat is not part of the round, it's part of the barrel. The brass is 100% identical, and the CIP rates them to the same max pressure and doesn't differentiate between them.
Doesn't every round have a throat?
No, it has a neck but no throat.
>No gun here.
Get a gun and join us. Then you can look down on others who dont have guns.
the difference is in the chambers
throat is part of the chamber
No. 5.56 barrel can shoot both safely, but a barrel or firearm that is marked .223 is most likely unsafe and you should contact the manufacturer to verify
Aren't there .223 rifles with slightly bigger chambers so they can shoot both?
.223 Wylde isn't the same thing as a normal .223.
That said, I've never actually seen a gun chambered for only .223.
dumb frogposter
556 brass is drawn thicker and has less case capacity.
>but a barrel or firearm that is marked .223 is most likely unsafe
this hasn't been true for decades. No modern firearm is like this. I guess if you're shooting an antique than maybe.
>no
>antique
>round invented in 1962
millennial go and stay go
We all do realize that 5.56 and 223 is universally interchangeable. There is no way big companies like federal take the time to change just because NATO specs and civilian specs. When you buy xm193 you are buying m193 that didn’t meet NATO QC requirements so the entire manufactured lot has to be discarded. .223 ammo is literally m193 that they didn’t feel like annealing the brass to save time. Shoot both don’t be a pussy
Don't listen to the guy he wants to ruin your rifle.
It’s not going to ruin your rifle, if wolf and it’s various surprises with pressure variance hasn’t blown up in my face yet I doubt that a box of 55gr .223 and a box of xm193 is going to make a difference.
Nice try but I'm not falling for your tricks. All the experts seem to think the higher pressure of 556 is a problem in 223 chambers.
>experts
Trick is don’t buy a gun chambered in just .223 and you won’t have to worry but I still wouldn’t worry about it. It’s not like your barrel extension is made of pot metal like an io ak
name one rifle that can't safely shoot 556 and was made in the last 20 years go go go go
Pre-580-series Mini 14
CZ 527 American
Howa 1500 Varmint
Remington 7600
>21 years old is "antique"
MILLENNIAL GO AND STAY GO
I would pay money for retard pepe action figures.
I've seen ads for rifles that are ".223 O N L Y" but I've never bought one. They probably died out a while ago.
What are you basing this list on? I don't know about other guns, but for the CZ i can personally say 556 is fine, i shoot shitty 62 grain 556 out of it becuase i'm not gonna buy special ammo for my AR and CZ to plink with.
My buddies axis likes to give hard extraction with 556, but other than that, it's fine with 556 as well.
The Howa in particular has ".223 Remington ONLY" stamped into the barrel and the others say not to use 5.56 NATO in their owner's manuals.
Also the Howa has a 1:12 twist barrel.
I got a 223 only ruger American and blast 556 through it without issue. There's been tons of testing on this. Unless you some how got a barrel cut at 223 saami minimum specs (hint to manage something like this you have to special order them not like regular barrels) and fire 556 you won't exceed any pressure ratings.
Not in the least
