sorry you're not a P-38
>something nice
It was nearly as good as the mustang.
But that's not the Yak.
Actually that seems to be a model.
>tfw you will never have a dog and a MkXIV
Cringe
Guten Tag, Island Schweinhunds! Do I schmell Luftwaffles?
step aside fags
>not the fw190
Can I get a uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh
Indeed it's not.
Is that dog better than Nigger?
I'm ashamed to say I forget whose dog that was. It seems like every book I read written by the RAF features at least two dogs.
Guy Gibson's dog. Dambusters
Truth
Good interceptors and good range but I don't see what made them good fighters.
>wing to thick
>spar to far aft
>needs to be almost entirely redesigned by wars end
Like pic related, the Spitfire was obsolete as soon as it entered service, it was out turned, slower to climb, and less well armed than the slightly older Bf109.
>multiroles your Lufftwafe
he, nothing personel kido
Major Dick Bong, America's top ace, made 40 kills in a P-38.
>the Spitfire was obsolete as soon as it entered service
It likely received more design updates than any other fighter during the war, which was pretty impressive considering none of them significantly altered the design. Few aircraft were able to adapt to the changing needs of combat like it did, and though its performance wasn't incredible when compared to the late war fighters it was easily one of the best early war designs.
That doesn't mean jack shit. What if he flew the war in a juggernaut instead of lightning and scored 60?
You asked what made it a good fighter. I gave you an example of someone who made not just a lot of kills, but the most kills of any American pilot, in said fighter.
The P-38 was also great for long range escort missions for bombers, before the advent of the P-51, and was a decent CAS platform too.
The Little Huntress may not have been the best, but she was a valiant scrapper that remained relevant for an entire decade.

Mig-3 is pretty uninteresting.
Blind or stupid?
Im sorry thats not a late war jet
"only pretending" I bet
If the bf109 was so good then why did Germany lose the battle of Britain?
Checkmate
step aside faggots
Because 80% of the Luftwaffe had already been moved East in prep for Barbarossa, and only the rawest pilots were assigned duty on the Atlantikwall. Not to mention that in strategic terms the Battle of Britain didn't really exist, as the elimination of the RAF wasn't a prerequisite for an invasion that was never seriously considered viable by German high command anyway.
"""""fighter""""""
Mate it was barely an experimental aircraft and crashed on nearly every test flight
Well, because Hitler was a retard and nobody could tell him without insulting him. The battle of britain was a battle of strategic bombardment and somehow one british bombing party getting through to blow up like 5 houses got Hitler so mad he wanted the Luftwaffe to target civilian targets instead of airfields, factories etc
>no gull wing
>no fixed gear
>Stuka
What?
I mean, he's kinda right if you give it the benefit of the doubt, as Stuka was not just the nickname given to the Ju 87, but just the name of a role. It was short for "Sturzkampfbomber" or dive bomber, and 109s with additional cannons would often also carry a bomb and perform CAS duties, acting similarly to dive bombers
no user, it's an a d v a n c e d STUKE which shared many parts with the BF109E.
Yeah the 229 wass a shit idea, tho I'm surprised noone brought up the 262 yet as it absolutely shat on bombing parties, which was exactly what it was designed for
i like the tempest
So do we consider this thicc girl a fighter, or are night fighters a separate category for ww2 purposes?
well, if the P61 gets to be a fighter, the Bf110 should also!
Excellent British radar whose importance wasn't realized by the Germans until late in the battle, ranges that left most Luftwaffe fighters with barely a dozen minutes of fuel for fighting over the actual target areas and the Royal Navy's uncontested hold of the English Channel allowing for the recovery of downed friendly pilots and the capture of enemy ones. Dogged Anglo tenacity played an important part, too, of course - but in regards to the airframes involved? The LW and RAF were pretty evenly matched.
I think a slightly more accurate German designation for fighters in the ground-attack role would be Jabos, or Jagdbombers.
A handsome machine, indeed.
Better make it a heavy fighter instead of night fighter category, since there's stuff like the Zerstörer on day duty (well, they tried it at least) and some Fw190 with radar for night duty, though the overlap between the two groups is of course massive.
A shame you couldn't see it in its most important role as a night fighter, though it was later eclipsed.
Which was better: bf109 or fw190?
Hey, no cheating. OP said WW2, that's an La-9.
Experience aside, weren't yakolev-3 top of the line end of the war fighters that excelled in dog fighting
Sexiest WW2 bird. Not even debatable
only slightly edged out by this, the sexiest aircraft ever built
It was a mediocre interceptor and of no strategic importance to the war.
why was the cowling so long if it's a radial?
pretty though
Fuel tanks, maybe? Corsair did the same thing
I'll agree that the 262 looks good
Thats a weird looking F-4U Corsair

>why was the cowling so long if it's a radial?
A twin-row radial.
>turn it up
yeah, I think not.
OP asked for the best fighter of world war 2, not the best fighter of the beginning of world war 2
>best fighter aircraft of world war 2
That's not a P-38.
If there is a yoke in the cockpit, it's not a fighter
Step aside, small fry
>262
>lol it's only 30mm
...
>Minimal use of restricted materials
>Uses the proven, easily updated Merlin
>excellent performance
Only the Ju-88 beats this thing in the "can do anything" category because the Ju-88 was also an air to ground weapon.
>Shit plane that was verging on obsolete in 1940 and very obsolete in 1941 with the introduction of the 109F
>easy to produce proven technology
vs.
>20 minutes of fuel
You make a convincing argument
>Got BTFO in France by the LW
>Only useful in BoB when escorted by Spitfires
>Okay against 30s Italian designs, gets BTFO by LW in the desert, gets replaced by the Tomahawk
>Get BTFO by japs in Malaya
>Relegated to ground attack for the rest of the war in in the secondary front known as Italy
Technically speaking the F6F got the highest kill count in thhe war that I know of
The Mosquito was far more than just a heavy bomber/ASW/Night Fighter/Pathfinder; it was also an air superiority fighter
>Gets hit with multiple 30mm rounds
>just shake it off lol
In the US Navy and the PTO at 5,168
Mustang had more kills with 5,954, 4,950 of which in the ETO.
I know. They also made a fighter version of the Ju-88 too, for some reason.
Mosquito was a spectacular success in so many roles and it flew @ 400MPH
I understand that we're divided on the best fighter. But at least we're all United in thinking that the Lancaster was the best bomber, right?
Behind the B-29, yes. Though it wasn't really that suitable for day light raids, it did get results though.
That's not a B-29, so no
This is a thread about fighter aircraft, not bombs.
Barrel bomb spotted, those belong in Japan
>Bombs cities to strengthen enemy resistance
Wonder why...
I believe bombing Berlin was part of the British plan to take pressure of RAF fields by making the Germans bomb population centers back
Performance aircraft spotted, the sound of crashing on a carrier deck is very loud
“Fortis Leader?”
F
The sky is for heroes
>the sound of crashing on a carrier deck is very loud
"Better our own interceptors than Jap kamikazes" thought the designers.
Read a book
Late model?
For me, it's the Ta 152. Sure it's not as fast or cool as jets but it was way cheaper and easier to maintain/manufacture. If Nazis weren't retards they would've churned this out instead of the 262 to greater effect.
>tfw no flight sim campaign where you operate with the OSS using your Mosquito night fighter
