Depends where you are. If you're in the US, a 550 is a pipe dream unless you already have you're eye on one at an LGS. As for parts kits, AR builds are easy af and can be done sub-1k even if you're dead set on authentic mil parts. AK parts kits aren't satisfying imo.

yeah im in the US. I don't own any guns in 5.56. I already have an SBR in 5.45 and ak74 mags. I can't find any cheap colt parts kits atm but I guess I can try forums when im ready.

I get that it's an investment and all that shit. I know it's probably way more reliable too. How much better of it as a gun and a shooter than an AR is what im asking I guess. because for the price of the other shit I mentioned, it would like cost me about the same to just get an SG550

Swiss here. It's a good rifle for 300m and for the engineering. It's real steel quality, good trigger, nice sights, bipod is a bit wonky but quite useable. But remember, it has not evolved as the AR has and it's not a Lego gun. Parts and acessories are not plenty and expensive. It's an excellent rifle, but the age starts to show in terms of ergonomics, weight and additional parts. But it will always shoot and never let you down.

Then you should definitively get a 550. It's the antithesis to a lego AR: you can only get high quality proprietary stuff for it.
Depends, as always. It will shoot very well out to 300m, with scope up to 600m. Running around for CQB is fun with the folded stock, but it's no 1337 0perat0r gun for sure.

Well. I have an FAL, an aks74u, and an mp5k and a couple pistols. I m just wondering if it makes more sense for me to build up an ak74 since i got ammo and mags, buy what i think is probably the best rifle for 5.56,

SG550 is not the "best" 556 rifle for most people. It is, however, one of the most expensive.
If you're really comfortable with the SG550 price, consider a SCAR16.
