F-14's downfall was only that in the early 90s a certain politician had a hard on for murdering the program due to hating northrop.

Also the navy lied about the jet endlessly, and deliberately took shit engines and avionics that were not ready in order to keep cost down to try and "Just the tip" the entire jet into production down the road. This lead to accidents and lift lost that hurt the entire program's reputation.

Never played it, never will. I consider the second "trilogy" to be the "Old ace combats" becasue the first trilogy was hard to come by, the second trilogy (4, 5, and Zero) everyone knows, and the third trilogy (6, and the other one) weren't very memorable.

Nah, all the plane models have gotten a slight downgrade in the latest build, probably to get that hard 60fps locked in for the Xbawx and PS4.
Its especially noticeable in the hangar section of the recent Gamescom release, the Hornet has noticeably worse textures and polygon count compared to the earlier screencaps.

Honestly I don't mind lower quality models and textures as long as the framerate is as high, and as stable as possible.
Action games basically require 60fps imo.

5 and 0 are the easiest to emulate, just need a decent PC. They play perfectly fine. 04 has some issues like completely BLACKED planes but is playable. 6 only works on a 360, it's not even backwards compatible yet. 2 and 3 emulate fine, 3 has a fan translation to get the proper experience. X emulates fine. Assault Horizon Legacy is a remake of 2 and pretty decent, but as far as I know only works on 3DS.

You can play them in any order you wish or is convenient to you, but obviously keep in mind that as time moves the gameplay gets more refined, the graphics better and the mission design more interesting. 04 is pretty barebones compared to later titles, for example. It's recommended to play 5 before 0, as 0 is a prequel to it. Rest of the games aren't really related.
