Do we have the technology to make this thing fly?

Yes and no. A VTOL jet transport is totally possible, the Germans had a working prototype way back in the '60s, and it worked pretty well aside from having a short range.

The Pelican is too big and heavy to be practical with modern engine tech, though, and IIRC it can go straight from ground to space, which is totally impossible with current tech.

this
Right now the only currently operated example of this type of design in militaries that I know of is the Osprey (prop not jet), the F-35b, and the Harrier. The Osprey has about the same range as the Do 31, but is pretty tricky on fast landings (which is how almost all accidents on the Osprey happen).

what's up with those wingtip pods

Hells yeah user
our modern technology will take it right to the scene of the crash
hell it will even beat the fire trucks and police there by 30 minutes

Was watching a documentary the man said human beings are so far advanced these days they can make anything happen only thing holding us back is imagination to think of what to make

A cluster of four micro jets.

Lmao okay Ron White

I really want the Pelican to be real.

Problem with jet engines on wingtips is that if one breaks or gets damaged entire plane is fucked.

It's not a good design.

*energy to power it

Yeah for like 5 minutes at most. That thing would suck fuel just hovering a foot off the ground

It looks un aerodynamic as fuck, a flying brick held in the air by the power of the engines alone. Incredibly inefficient and incredibly hot, fodder for long range infrared missiles.

Space craft dont really need to be aerodynamic do they? And im talking about craft that dont enter atmosphere.

that thing would have to fly on pure thrust
it could work but no one with he money is that stupid

They do not need aerodynamics in space but they need it in the atmosphere, especially when it's attempting to get out of it. Mass also has a say when travelling in space and it being as big as it is isn't helping.

Who ever redesigned the pelican at 343 should be shot

It honestly looks like something out of Flash Gordon.

Beautiful

Marines? Orbital nukes? Let's just go straight to the fucking antimatter bombs.

In the lore, they used all the typical sci-fi world ending devices. The marines were just for stuff where you didn't want to turn the planet into glass.
