What are the grips on WW2 GI 1911s made of?

Plastic.

I can't tell if that's amazing or retarded.

ITT: Boomer taste

I like classic 1911’s. Just something about a worn finish from use and checkered wood grips.

Vomit inducing

There's 38 super 1911s available for well under $2k, RIA makes one for example. They're popular with a lot of mexicans, Mexico doesnt allow civilians to own "military" calibers or any handgun caliber larger that .38, so they cant get a .45 1911, it has to be .38 super

Even JMB knew the 1911 was a mistake.

Attached: Browning-Hi-Point.jpg (1024x575, 97K)

>even JMB knew the 1911 wasn't the epitome of a combat handgun
Protip: neither was the BHP, If anything it has less staying power due to being an awkward intersection of the supreme shootability of the 1911 and and supreme utilitarianism of wonder 9s. It gave up all of the good things about the 1911 that keeps it continually popular while offering only some of the utility of modern designs. It's nothing but a intermediate step in firearms design that will surely fade in time due to its complete mediocrity in every category when compared against competitors. At least the 1911 can hold it's head high in some categories.

I would love to love 1911's but sadly my hands are too small for me to be comfortable shooting one. Being a tinkerer they seem like steel joy.

Ah, well. There's other options.

They are. But so are all the early 20th century pocket autos. Being a tinker myself, I love them. The actions were all mostly attempts to get around JMBs various patents. The Ortgies for instance does not have a single screw in the damn thing.

Wha...? They're so thin though. I have small hands, I can't get the pad of my finger all the way onto the trigger of a stock Beretta or P2xx series Sig, but shooting a 1911 is an ergo-gasmic experience. Try one with slimmer grips?

>At least the 1911 can hold it's head high in some categories.

Nostalgia is the only category it wins. Everything else can be done better by another design.

still not sure if I like the look. The polished side with satin top and bottom looks kind of goofy.

Don't want to kill a thread to ask this question, so I'll highjack this one:
I'm looking into buying my first 1911. Should I jump on pic related? I don't really know anything about Kimbers in general, I've mostly been looking into Rugers and Springfields. But from some quick searches, the gun seems to normally go for >$1200 new and >$1000 used, so it seems like a decent deal. Anyone got one?

(you)

Attached: bestedc.jpg (2000x1125, 663K)

I've had good luck with Kimber, but I suggest approaching used ones with caution. He might be trying to offload a lemon if he's going that far under average.

Because reasons.

STI

Yeah so here's the problem with that while statement. There are more countries than the US and while the 1911 has some great characteristics, most of the ones we know and love were built up by competition shooters and custom builders, not necessarily the gun. Had the HP, which was mostly the work Saive, been adopted in the US as a standard sidearm then you bet your ass everyone would be beating off to it. The 1911 got it's real foothold from guys being familiar with it and working on it constantly, much like the AR15 family

So thin grips or the Springfield EMP. There are also a ton of small frame 1911 Look alikes in smaller calibers

Yeah the thing with that is, while 1911 triggers are fantastic, that gap closes rapidly when you look at the SAO versions of other guns

even though its probably a bad idea, I want a colt defender
