this is just what ive heard so id recommend you do your research to confirm this:
you can apply for a shotgun license and providing you have a clean record then the police will give you one for roughly £85. This allows you to own shotguns which can hold 3 rounds or less (including a chambered round). I dont think you need to give a valid reason for this license when applying, it is up to them to give a valid reason to refuse you a license. If you want a rifle, long barrel pistol or shotgun which can hold more rounds, then you will need to apply for a firearms license. These are much more difficult to obtain (but far from impossible). You will need to provide a valid reason for one when applying but I think pest control or competition shooting are valid answers here. Pretty sure the biggest round you can get semi-auto in a rifle is only .22, anything higher can only be used with a rifle which is manually charged. Pistols are illegal and as far as I'm aware anything i havent mentioned is illegal also.
