I'm looking for a hunting rifle that doesn't have too much recoil for my 9 year old. I've got a good reduced load for my .303-06 (sporterized Arisaka, got it in 1986, love it) using 7.62x39 hunting bullets, but I usually hunt with that rifle and my full power 180 grain pills. I'm kind of torn between a .25-06 and a .260. Factory ammo availability isn't a concern, I handload. Which would be better?
TL;DR: .260 or .25-06 for a light whitetail rifle?
this thread was here less than a week ago get a 6mm Rem
Jaxson Cox
.243 Winchester.

I'm old, get over it.
Pa-in-law has a .243. I want an excuse to get a new rifle.
Veddy interesting... and it looks like it likes 4064, which is the powder I load everything else with. Only thing is, it needs to be at least a .25 caliber for a couple of private hunts I'm taking the kid to.

Fuck off boomer your kids gonna end up with a feminine lisp like every other kid these days. He doesn't want to go hunting he's 9. Get him a fucking air soft pistol and some friends.
Wyatt Clark
I think .25-06 is pretty neato, but that's mostly because I'm in love with the .30-06 and its children. I don't have one but I will someday (along with a .35 Whelen).
Although the other user already hit on it, .243 is practically the official unofficial standard issue youth cartridge. And it is a real sweetheart.
Oliver Brooks
6.5 Creed /.260, .243 or 7mm-08.

I'm fifteen years too young to be a boomer. And he started hunting with me a couple years ago. He got a spike buck last year with a 20 gauge slug in a shotguns only zone. We're in a rural county and he's in 4H, does archery, smallbore rifle, hunting, fishing, and camping projects. He's /out/ as fuck.

Me, too. That's what has me thinking I want a .25-06. First hunting rifle I ever bought was that .303-06 and there's a reason the .30-06 family is still so popular over a hundred years later.
.308 case love, huh?

If you consider 308 or Creedmoor, I'd suggest getting an Ar 10. The inline stock and buffer dampen recoil a lot. I'm sure you could build one in a weird caliber. I've used a Lee Enfield and p14 for years now, but I'm building an Ar10 for my all around shtf and hunting rifle.
Otherwise, I've got friends who swear by 22-250, and I've got 2gun buddies who hunt with milsurp like me and swear that 6.5 arisaka and carcano are great for smaller people. They use military config rifles, but sporters are pretty cheap and good sporters (free floated) can get close to 1 moa with good factory ammo.

Daddy wants an AR10 in .338 Federal, but I'd rather the kiddo shoot a bolt action for the time being.
Camden Adams
Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I've got to get AFK, but I appreciate the help.
>prolly gonna get him a .260 Remington or a 6.5 Creedmore, whichever happens to be the cheaper rifle at decent quality when I go to the gun store. Or wholesalehunter.com, which is where I've bought my last three new guns.
Jonathan Walker
>wholesalehunter
Their shop is 5 minutes away and they're fucking dicks
David Jackson
Get him a .243. Great round for white tail.
Brayden Robinson
Pill is actually a pretty common term for bullet
Thomas Campbell
243 would be ideal, but if you need something else, get a 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5mm Creedmoor, or a 7MM-08. There are also low recoil 30-30 rounds and you could get a 336Y.
Just get a bolt action .223 assuming you're just hunting whitetail
Luis Young
Opie back.
It's gotta be at least a quarter bore. I've got a feeling someone fucked up a time or two and I'm just stuck with the result of their stupidity. Either that or some ignorant Fudd made the rules about what you can and can't carry. Doesn't matter why, if we're hunting Nilgai together he needs at least a .25 caliber.
My dad was a boomer, but he DIAF (true story, bro). Your dad was a fagget.
Ian Sullivan
6mm creedmoor (not 6.5mm). It's getting more popular in competitions because the recoil is so light yet it can use some pretty long range bullets. 25-06 or anything else quarter bore is a bad decision tbqh
