From what I understand, the reels of film are public domain and held by government institutions, and the footage is digitized by companies who then sell licences for said footage to be used in documentaries.
It's been monetised, basically. Even though the film itself is public domain, the files recorded and processed by the companies are their property and are only available in high quality without a watermark by licensing the clip to use in a product. That's why you only see short snippets in documentaries, and the footage trickles down to the masses this way.
The companies also have websites and Youtube channels where they upload watermarked and low resolution footage, but at the very least it's nice to be able to see the footage at all.

WWII was actually pretty chill for most soldiers. Sit around the post for several weeks, maybe an occasional hour of shelling if that, maybe you'll get into a firefight each month. Even if you're German.

Contrast that with Vietnam and the heavy reliance on air mobility, where the average soldier spends 80% of his time foot slogging through hostile bush before getting choppered back to the fob to do it again in 8 hours. The average soldier sees far and away more combat than a WWII GI, despite the smaller scale of the conflicts on broad terms.
