Ian's a pretty cool and chill guy, though I wish he would put a little more effort into the technical aspect of shooting videos. I know that he hates it, but at the same time I don't really care that he hates it because I can just watch something else if his videos aren't good enough. Unsteady camerawork, blurry focus, awkward shots, bad audio - they're almost never dealbreakers, but they're also the only thing holding back his videos from having that completely professional sheen. That said, "professional sheen" isn't really what sells his channel, and the videos don't need to do more than deliver the content. Still, though I don't get the sense that it's holding the channel back it's also not doing it any favours.

Karl covers a more diverse range of subjects and is more willing to hold and advocate for strong opinions. He's generally level-headed and obviously smarter, more impartial, and more capable of evaluating ideas than the average person. However, his willingness to take a position has two correlate problems. Firstly, sometimes I feel he rushes into a position before he should. But that's not a dealbreaker, and it's somewhat redeemed by how he can reason himself out of a position he shouldn't be in even if he shouldn't have been so eager to take it to start with. It's not that bad. The more serious problem is that if he's got a strong opinion about something that I don't care about then his serious and intense manner of discussion can be boring - he doesn't appear to be concerned with bringing the audience with him when he goes to talk about something. That's fine if you're only interested in reaching people who already care about it, but it's not what I would do. When he forms a strong opinion in opposition to mine, I think that the lack of 'bringing the audience with him' shows more clearly, because when you're on the opposite side of him he comes off more as ranting than as compelling.

Still, these aren't big problems.

Karl is more than "decently educated", he's more educated than Ian. You also didn't mention he's a much better shooter than Ian, which is good for their InRange stuff. Ian is more of an average, and Karl is a much higher skilled tester.

I'm talking as an embodiment of the two main types of gun owners I've run into. Yes Karl is a better shooter. Like it or not, Ian appears better educated. That has to do with "refinement" for lack of a better term. And again corresponds with these two subcultures. It's not that the people like Karl aren't smart. Okay so I see these threads quite often on here, I’m a fan of Ian and Karl, and I’m also on the (far) left, so let me see if I can add anything to the conversation and address some of the recurring discourse I see around Ian and Karl from my perspective.

Before I get started let me tell you where I’m coming from:

So, with that out of the way let me talk about Ian and Karl, and why I think they have more of a noticeable leftist following.

As a left-wing person into guns we are starved for content on youtube and in general.
Most of the guys making content come across as crazy, nationalistic gunfuckers who probably have a Rhodesian flag on their wall. Ian and Karl project a much more measured persona, they repeatedly affirm they aren’t interested in investing the firearms with political meaning based on their historical context. Ian’s reaction to the FAL video was a good example of this. Karl is the more overtly political, he comes across as the “just stay the fuck off my property” tendency of libertarian. A libertarian who doesn’t like government, but also distrusts big business. Personally I have a lot of issues with libertarianism, but I can respect this position much more than the more ANCAP, or weirdly religious tendencies I see online. Karl especially has also on several occasions shown an awareness (limited but still an awareness) for things like racism, over-policing, Native American genocide and so on. Again, this is something that makes the content more approachable for someone like me.

This is kinda asinine. Just because someone doesn’t overtly miss Rhodesia or support Trump, doesn’t mean they’re a Communist. I get the impression that Ian (like Karl) is probably a libertarian with more of an anti-government/anti-corporate streak than most people are used to seeing online. I should point out that I’d also direct this criticism at leftists arguing that Ian and Karl are left. They are just two guys with their own political beliefs, making thoughtful and interesting content in a space that could use more of it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing more shooters who are in line with groups like the Socialist Rifle Association, Redneck Revolt, the John Brown Gun Club etc. making youtube content. Until then though, left wing enthusiasts will probably gravitate more toward Ian and Karl’s content.
