They like it because the round it was based on, .40 s&w, is one of the most perfect pistol rounds ever developed, eclipsed only by .45 ACP. 10mm, or ".40 Largo" as firearms experts prefer to call it, was a failed attempt at improving the effectiveness of .40 s&w. The additional caselength was originally intended to allow extra powder to be used, but stretching a .40 case resulted in excessive thinning of the case walls. 10mm is typically downloaded in comparison to .40 s&w to prevent the case splitting. 10mm was an interesting idea, but has no practical applications. Its simply a meme that is an outgrowth of .40 s&w's unrivalled popularity.

While the FBI tested the performance and viability of the full-power 10mm, they preferred the performance of the downloaded 10mm which later became colloquially known as the "10mm Lite" or "10mm FBI." The problem was that the 10mm frames proved too large for manlet hands and even large-handed agents complained about the size and bulk of the S&W 1076 handgun when carrying. The case length was shortened and the .40 S&W was created. The .40 matched the performance of the 10mm Lite, but was able to fit in smaller, lighter, more concealable S&W 4006.
