I bought the shitty rothco ones. They are so bad that the soles melted on hot pavement cuz the soles are not even rubber they are plastic. But...then I brought the shoes to a shoe repair shop where a nice Mexican man resoled the shoes, treated the leather, and gave the shoes new laces that did not suck. They are an excellent pair of boots now. I regularly run 6 miles a day in them and the soles do not fall apart or melt or any of that bullshit (trying to condition my feet for the Army like John Lovell suggests to do). So there is always buying a shit pair and getting them good by letting shoe repairmen work in them

Don’t get rothco. You will regret it because they suck. Like taking them off and going barefoot after 15 minutes suck.

I've had Altama and McRae, both have been excellent. Whichever of those two you find a better deal on is the way to go. Rothco boots will fall apart pretty rapidly under even light use.

Which plastic layer? The soles were completely replaced and restitched with vibram brand soles (actual rubber, good grip, excellent quality). The leather on the shoes are actual leather and I give it a light shine with Lincoln Wax to make it water resistant and prevent very bad cracking on the front of the boots. Other than that idk what plastic can break on the rothco boots.
