a lot of the times people find shit that's just convenient to use. I've heard stories of people in the army using or attempting to use shit like PKMs or RPKs because they're really nice MG's and the ammo is available and there isn't really a point in not having one around if there aren't enough functioning American guns.
I think the story behind the PPSH 41 in that photo is that they found it in some weapons cache that was being used by insurgents and someone tricked it out and let their unit use it to clear rooms because it shot really quick and had good penetration.
