There are two types. Real nightvision uses image intensifier tubes to amplify visible light. There are arguably 3 generations. The first generation is basically useless without an illuminator (infrared flashlight), which isn't a good idea if your enemy also has night vision. Second and third generation were called starlight night vision when introduced because they could operate with only ambient starlight. Without getting into technical details, each generation offers better light amplification and resolution than the previous.
Recently there are also a lot of companies selling cheap near-infrared cameras with built-in displays as "digital nightvision". These don't really amplify ambient light, so an illuminator is required, but some have higher resolution than gen 1 night vision.

thats my understanding. The thing with 30mm is that its just about the sweet spot between "damage upon hitting" and "reasonably high rate of fire". Now granted you can probably kill an incoming missile with a .22 if you can hit it (in the side), but when there's a fuckhueg missile coming straight at you you better err on the safe side. Missiles have become bretty damn fast in the last 40 years, so you need a LOT of boolits if you want to hit one, even at a low-delta aspect as "incoming". With, say, a 40mm, your fire rate goes down drastically (compared to retardedly high 20 and 30mm gatlings), and the bigger the round, the lower (even more lower) it will be. Thats why "the danish one", the 76(?)mm, probably depends on "the flak effect", trying to hit the missile with proximity/time fused HE shrapnel rounds, rather than the volume-of-fire "golden bb" theory of the 30mms and below.
