If your daughter doesn't care about you, you are doing something incredibly wrong.

That’s the elephant in the room problem with parenting- there’s no effective guidance. We default to what we remember of how our parents brought us up. Which fails because we’re not bringing ourselves up, we’re growing a completely different person. I’ll bet your mom was ok with you until you hit 10 or 11. That’s around the age that the brain has developed enough, and you have enough life experience, that you start growing your own sense of identity.

It sounds like your mom had some issues with the way she was brought up, and is very defensive about how you turned out. I suspect your dad did the Ward Cleaver thing because that’s the model he knows. Either that or his dad checked out completely at an early age.

You can’t fix your parents, but you don’t have to try to be the person you think they want you to be, either. Figure out what you want out of life and put in the work to make it happen.
