If you're a mobile fag at least on the iPhone you can see whether the pic is opened as XXXXXXXXm.jpg or XXXXXXXX.jpg.
General rule is that if you open a thread every thumbnail will definitly link you to the non mobile version if you open the pic in new tab, but on some boards (k ,hc, b, his and probably a few more) opening thumb nails means that you open in the threads only a scaled down version for larger images and also links you only to m.jpg if you open a new tab and that you need to remove the m yourself and occasionally change the jpg to png yourself when the original pic was a png.
I hope my explanation is not too messy.
